The 232-ATSC 4K HDTV Tuner, the 5th-generation ATSC HDTV tuner from Contemporary Research, adds new capabilities to the industry-standard 232-ATSC series. New features include tuning H.264 programs up to 1080p, output scaling up to 4K, and IPTV streaming output via Ethernet port. The new tuner is fully compatible with control commands for previous models.

The integrator-friendly HDTV tuner is controllable with 2-way RS-232, IP Telnet and UDP, as well as wireless and wired IR commands. An onboard Web page enables remote configuration, control, and monitoring.

A full-featured, commercial grade HDTV tuner, the 232-ATSC 4K can receive both digital MPEG-2/H.264 and analog channels, in ATSC, clear QAM, and NTSC formats. Using an optional RF-AB switch, the tuner can switch between antenna and cable feeds.

Best of all, our free CR Toolbox Windows app can find all the tuners on the network. Then click each unit in the list to set up channels and features, access the onboard web page for control and testing, and install new firmware.

In the pandemic, companies reduced office space as remote workers expanded. Then the companies wanted the people back – the now-smaller space. Staff left their comfy, quiet home offices to sharing space with others at folding tables, and hot-desking. More people sharing less space, reducing privacy while increasing noise and distractions. Sure, you have headphones (joy), but others can listen with a button click. Call centers and other business have the same issue.

One solution is reducing ambient noise with the Contemporary Research SMG-40 Sound Masking Generator. The SMG emits a low-level background hiss, which your brain cancels out – also reducing the office noise as well. As a result, workers don’t need headphones full-time, and makes conversation more private.

The SMG-40 is easy to integrate. Any kind of speaker can be used, from 4/8 Ohm, 25V speakers or Cambridge Qt Emitter RJ45 connections. Masking audio level, bass and treble can be tweaked. Music or announcement audio can be mixed, and output can be turned off with a contact closure.

Today’s factory floors often have too much noise for audio alerts to be effective. Lumalert solves that issue, featuring a bright color LED bar triggered by commands over an Ethernet network. In fact, manufacturing visual alerts are so prevalent, there’s an ISO 3864 standard for colors and flashing. Response is immediate as each effect is stored as a preset in memory, and a command can be sent to all, a group or one Lumalert. Power is provided by PoE, so installation is simpler.

For example, Lumalert fixtures across the factory could indicate:

Green – machine working properly

Blue – preventative maintenance due soon

Red – Machine/Robot offline

Yellow - backlog in unit testing

Orange - parts inventory running low

Purple – quality control issue

Cyan – Unsafe conditions such as high noise, air quality, temperature

Installation is simple and straightforward. Each Lumalert can be surface-mounted or to a 2-gang box. Two DIP switches on the back sets the unit’s unique device number. Once installed on the network and powered up, the installer can scan and discover all the Lumalert fixtures using free LA Toolbox software. Each has an onboard Web page for testing and setup.

When all units are online, select one and set up the site presets. Then click an option on the Web page to update all the units (feature coming soon).

System commands should be familiar to CR integrators – sent as an IP broadcast to all, containing the device number and preset number. There are three types of device numbers: a specific device number, all devices (4095), or a Zone number (256, 512, etc.) that triggers all units within that zone.
