Even if you have been following us for the shortest amount of time, it probably did not take you
too long to discover that we are all about the wild at Red Chalk. Genuine nurturers of nature over here. We love it and we respect it.
Butterflies hatch and take flight right outside our doors all summer long. We’ve had ducks walk right in and tour the joint like they owned it. Once upon a time we had our friendly and neighborly squirrel, Lady Pete the Fearless, enter as she pleased to steal peanuts. We have spider stories, snake stories, orphaned baby squirrel stories, we even have a ninja mouse shacked up in a box of wine story. Today started with a new one. It had a somber beginning, but thankfully a hopeful conclusion.
Sadly, upon arrival today we found an opossum, twenty feet from our doorstep, that had gotten as far as she could before succumbing to injuries most likely sustained from the very busy street nearby. She was a fighter and she chose to close her eyes at the right place. Upon picking her up to move her it did not take long to realize that she is a Momma and her pouch was full of babies. They survived the cold night. The last of her warmth was given to them. Good job, Mom!
We were able to safely remove them and get them indoors.
Now, this is the most important part if you are to find yourself in a similar situation.
Find the right people.
We are so happy that we did.
A very big thank you to the wonderful people of Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge for their quick response and mighty hearts. These sweet babies were in the proper loving care of the right person barely an hour after they were found. Exquisite.
