32,000 years ago man began making drawings on the inside of cave walls; no one knows why. The handprints made on cave walls are said to be the oldest portrait of man. Art has been in us from the very beginnings of civilization. From the paintings of warriors and hunts in the dark remote corners of a cave, to the master works of the renaissance painted on chapel ceilings, we are defined by images. I’m sure you didn’t expect our company history to go back quite so far, but Ugg the cave man may very well have been the first graphic designer, no really. His paintings were not decorations for he and Mrs. Ugg’s home, they were sending a message (to who, we don’t really know), but we can still understand the hunt scenes he depicted. Our logo is his portrait and ours; it’s the thing we have in common. Art, is about sending messages and leaving our mark on the world. Our name Creative Man Studio is a nod to the creativity innate in mankind. We’ve come a long way from Ugg, but we still use the principles behind his art. A scar from 20 years in this business.

Years ago, a client asked me to skip the strategy phase to save money. Just make the logo, they said. We know our customers.

I said yes. The logo looked great. Six months later they were back because nothing matched: the website said one thing, the trucks said another, the ads said a third.

The lesson cost both of us. Now I won't start a brand without strategy, even when someone asks nicely. It's the difference between decoration and a brand that works.

3 things Texas contractors get wrong on Google Business Profile.

1. Wrong category. "Contractor" is vague. Pick the specific trade: "Roofing contractor," "Electrician." Google ranks specificity.

2. No photos of actual work. Stock photos don't build trust. Your truck, your crew, your finished jobs. Ten real photos beat a hundred stock ones.

3. Ignoring reviews. An unanswered bad review scares off ten good customers. Reply to every review, good or bad, within 48 hours.

Your Google profile is free advertising. Treat it like a job site: show up and keep it clean.
