Have you ever had an idea for a digital product and immediately started thinking about what should go in it?

The tabs in the spreadsheet.

The pages in the workbook.

The colors. The fonts. The cute little cover.

There’s just one problem: none of those things tell you whether someone actually wants to buy it.

Before creating a digital product, start somewhere else:

What problem is this going to solve?

A budget template might help a small business owner stop wondering where their money went every month.

A bookkeeping checklist might help a new business owner feel confident they aren’t forgetting an important financial task.

A tax prep worksheet might make gathering information for tax season less chaotic.

Those are problems people can recognize.

The spreadsheet, checklist, or workbook is simply the format you use to help solve them.

If you’ve thought about creating a digital product for your bookkeeping business, what problem would you want it to solve?

Before you spend money or time getting more people to your bookkeeping website, try this quick test.

Pretend you know absolutely nothing about your business.

Open your homepage and give yourself about 10 seconds to answer four questions:

1. Who is this bookkeeper for?
2. What problem can they help me solve?
3. How will their services make my life or business better?
4. What should I do next?

If those answers are easy to find, great. Your website is helping support the marketing, networking, referrals, SEO, content, or lead generation that brings people there.

If they aren’t, that doesn’t automatically mean you need to redesign your entire website.

You may have a messaging problem rather than a website problem.

And that’s worth figuring out before you send even more traffic to the site.

Lead generation gets you seen. Your message helps you get chosen.

I went into more detail about how the two work together here: https://websitesforbookkeepers.com/how-can-bookkeepers-turn-more-leads-into-clients/

A qualified lead and a converted client are not the same thing.

That distinction matters when you’re deciding where to put your marketing energy.

Lead generation solves a visibility problem. It helps the right people discover that your bookkeeping business exists.

Conversion solves a different problem. It helps those people understand why they should choose you.

You need both.

If your marketing is bringing in qualified leads but they aren’t becoming clients, the answer isn’t automatically “I need more leads.”

It may be worth looking at what those leads encounter after they find you.

Can they tell who you specialize in helping?

Do you explain more than the bookkeeping tasks you perform?

Do you connect those services to outcomes your clients actually care about?

For example, “monthly bookkeeping” tells someone what you provide.

“Know where your business stands without spending your evenings sorting out QuickBooks” helps them understand why that service matters.

More leads can create more opportunities.

But clearer messaging can help you make better use of the opportunities you already have.

Want to know whether your bookkeeping business is ready for AI search?

Try this simple exercise.

Before looking at your website, write down the five things you’d want ChatGPT—or a potential client—to understand about your business:

1. Who do you help?
2. What services do you provide?
3. What problems do those services help solve?
4. Why is your business particularly relevant to that audience?
5. What should someone do if they want to work with you?

Then open your website and see how quickly you can find those answers.

Check your homepage. Your service pages. Your About page. Your calls to action.

Then look beyond your website at places like your social profiles, directories, reviews, and professional listings.

Are they all telling roughly the same story?

If not, you may not need another AI optimization tactic.

You may need greater clarity and consistency first.

I went into more detail about how ChatGPT and other AI tools may discover and understand bookkeeping businesses here:

Getting discovered and getting chosen are two different jobs.

That distinction matters whether your bookkeeping business gets leads through referrals, networking, Facebook groups, advertising, SEO, a lead-generation company—or now, AI tools like ChatGPT.

A marketing strategy can introduce someone to your business.

But that potential client may still:

Search your business name.

Visit your website.

Read your reviews.

Look at your LinkedIn profile.

Or even ask ChatGPT what it can tell them about your company.

That’s where your broader digital presence comes in.

Your lead-generation strategy helps create the opportunity.

Your website, positioning, reviews, content, and other online information help the potential client understand whether you might be the right fit.

You don’t have to choose between generating leads and strengthening your online presence. They have different jobs—and they can work together.

What happens after someone refers a potential client to your bookkeeping business?

They probably don’t immediately fill out your contact form.

They look you up.

They visit your website. Check out your services. Maybe read your About page or scroll through your social media. They may compare you with another bookkeeper or two.

In other words, the referral got you noticed. But there’s still another job to do: help that person decide whether you’re the right fit.

That’s why referrals and a clear online presence work so well together.

Your referral partners can tell people you’re great at what you do. Your website can reinforce that recommendation by quickly answering questions like:

Do you work with businesses like mine?

Do you understand the problem I’m dealing with?

What will working with you actually help me accomplish?

What should I do if I’m interested?

A referral can open the door.

Clear messaging can make the potential client feel more confident walking through it.

When was the last time you looked at your website from the perspective of someone who was just referred to you?

Would ChatGPT know what your bookkeeping business is known for?

Imagine a potential client asks:

“Can you recommend a virtual bookkeeper for my small law firm?”

Now think about what ChatGPT—or the potential client—would find when researching your business.

Does your website clearly say that you work with law firms?

Do your social profiles say the same thing?

What about your directory listings, reviews, About page, and other places your business appears online?

AI search adds a new layer to how potential clients discover businesses, but the underlying question isn’t all that new:

Is it easy to understand who you help and what you help them with?

You don’t need to completely reinvent your marketing for AI.

But this might be a good time to look at your online presence through fresh eyes.

If someone had never heard of your bookkeeping business before today, what would they assume you’re known for?

Before you start marketing your bookkeeping business, there are a few questions you should be able to answer first.

Not questions about your logo.

Not questions about business cards.

Not even questions about which social media platform you should use.

Questions about who you help, what they need, and why they should choose you.

Because you can post every day, attend networking events, join Facebook groups, hand out business cards, or invest in advertising…

But if your marketing message isn’t clear, potential clients may still walk away wondering:

“Is this for me?”

So, let’s do a quick marketing readiness check. 👇

I’m sharing 3 questions that will help you think through the foundation of your marketing message.

For each one, I’ll also explain:

→ Why the question matters
→ How it connects to your potential clients
→ How to think through your answer

See how many you can confidently answer.

And if you get stuck, that’s okay. You don’t need to have every part of your business figured out before you start marketing.

In fact, you shouldn’t wait until everything is perfect to start planting seeds. 🌱

But the clearer you become about who you’re trying to reach and what you want them to understand about your business, the easier it becomes to plant the right seeds in the right places.

👇 Question #1 is in the comments.

Can you answer these 3 questions about your bookkeeping business?
