Join the challenge! I suggested this during an interview with partner agency DC Marketing Group.

"Be the Customer" challenge.

1. Position yourself as your customer
2. Google your service
3. Try to find yourself
4. Use google, AI, social, yelp, reddit, etc, whatever you or your customers would naturally do.
5. Click your website
6. Click the call to action or fill out the contact form

THIS is what you're asking customers to do. THIS is how they reach out. You should be paying attention to the flow.

Sorry! I feel like we’re hitting hard with the scare tactics this week. 🥺 But I promise, it’s really just about educating you!

There’s so much uncertainty and so much junk out there when it comes to websites, technology, and security. My goal is to help you navigate it.

I recently heard a community partner share how they ended up paying $2,000 to settle a copyright claim over a stock image they used on a client’s website.

The image came from Canva’s stock library. 😳

According to their account, the issue involved licensing requirements around modifying the original image.

Here’s what many business owners don’t realize: Just because an image is available in Canva (even with a paid subscription!) doesn’t necessarily mean you can use it however you want.

Canva has specific licensing restrictions, and using an image from their library isn’t always as straightforward as downloading it and uploading it.

I’m a fan of Canva! But this is a good reminder to read the fine print. 😥

Here at Alpine Design, we only use Adobe Stock or custom photography for our clients’ websites.

We invest in high-quality, professional stock photography and custom photoshoots.

For stock images, we purchase the appropriate license for use on your website. If you want to use that image for other purposes outside the website, additional licensing may be needed.

We stick with trusted, professional resources and a consistent process because we want to eliminate as many unknowns as possible.

Okay, I have to share this one. 😄 Back in 2019, I was in Washington, D.C. celebrating the launch of the APA Publication Manual (7th edition) with the American Psychological Association. Yes, there was a giant walking book. No, I don’t know who was inside it.

I’d been working on the APA Style website, the place millions of students go when they’re trying to figure out how to cite a source at 2 a.m. 🙋‍♀️ If you’ve ever written a college paper, there’s a good chance you’ve used it!

Most of my work happens from a home office, so not many people around here see this side of what I do. It’s been 15+ years of helping organizations make their websites easier to use, and I still love it.

I have since pivoted to my own agency model, Alpine Design, and now support smaller local business owners nationwide. I’m also working towards a business pillar that supports local non-profits.

There’s been some buzz lately about PHP security vulnerabilities affecting WordPress websites.

If you have a site with us, this doesn’t apply.
Before shifting into an agency model, I put A LOT (like a year’s worth!) of thought and research into which website builder we’d specialize in. I don’t want to deal with that tech headache and I know my clients don’t either.

We chose Duda.co for this exact reason. They are smaller, based in Palo Alto, California, offer great support and community. I have direct contact with them.

Unlike WordPress, Duda isn’t open source.

Think of WordPress like a giant library of plugins that developers can choose from to add features to websites. Some are built by big, reputable companies. Others are built by independent developers. And unfortunately, not all are maintained or secured equally. That’s why Wordpress sites need constant plugin updates. We don’t have that need.

Our platform takes a more controlled approach with carefully selected third-party apps, and centralized platform maintenance.

It’s a bit more pricey, but security and peace of mind were big factors in our decision.

Mission-driven work is where our hearts are, and this one was a big one.

Park Foundation, based in Ithaca, New York, works toward a more just, fair, and sustainable world. They give around $26 million a year to more than 300 organizations working on everything from voting rights and the environment to animal welfare and school food. 🌱🗳️🐾

With that much going on, the website had a big job. It had to tell their story, explain eight different funding areas, and help grant seekers find exactly what they need, without anyone getting lost.

What the site does well:
- Simple, clear menus: Who We Are, Funding Priorities, Grants, and Mission Aligned Investing
- An interactive timeline of the foundation's history
- Funding stories that show real-world impact
- Easy-to-find resources for applicants, like FAQs and deadlines

One of our favorite lines from founder Roy Park: "Look for opportunity more than security and stability." 🙌 We couldn't agree more.
