A Visit to the Smithsonian’s Postal Museum

John Sheehy, CEO of LoadTrek, has spent the majority of his career working with the United States Postal Service (USPS)—first as a private transportation contractor, then as a technology provider for postal contractors, and as President of the National Star Route Mail Contractors Association (NSRMCA). He now continues his involvement as a member of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum Board of Advisors.

Recently, Sheehy attended an advisory committee meeting at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. The committee discussed the current challenges facing federal institutions, particularly in Washington, and the critical role philanthropy plays in sustaining important historical and educational institutions like the Postal Museum.

The museum plays a vital role in preserving and sharing the story of how the USPS has helped citizens stay connected throughout history. It has also been instrumental in launching and supporting major businesses, from Sears and Montgomery Ward to modern giants like Amazon and Netflix. The Postal Service’s legacy is deeply intertwined with American commerce and communication, and continued support is essential to ensuring that this history is preserved for future generations.
