In honor of National Food Safety Education Month, we want to just take a minute to show our appreciation for our Food Safety people.

Have you ever stopped to consider the amount of effort and efficiency it takes to keep tabs on the safety of the world's food supply chain?

What a gargantuan task.

There are many FSQA (Food Safety and Quality Assurance) standards depending on the country and industry. Compliance with these practices and processes are paramount to the consistent safety and quality of consumer food products, and that starts with some incredible teams of Food Safety workers, like FSQA auditors.

These are the people going around ensuring everyone is doing things the right way, from the farm to the packing house. Their diligence is truly the key to global food safety, from providing growers with mitigation strategies on the farm, to acting as educator and collaborator to other agricultural food centers, it's one tough job, with a ton of moving parts.

So, from all of us here at ApRecs, thank you for all that you do. Thank you for keeping this massive ship sailing for the benefit of all of us.

September is National Food Safety Education Month, and it's interesting to consider all that means from both a consumer perspective and a farming one.

In reality, food safety starts on the farm. And even deeper, it starts with growers keeping accurate and up-to-date records.

American tree fruit is shipped worldwide, each country owning its own set of rules on what is considered safe and compliant. Without timely records, it would be impossible to keep track of which product has been applied to which block of fruit. Packers need this information to ensure fruit is shipped to the right place at the right time.

In ag today, there’s a lot of talk about needing to share records and farm information with packers and sales desks. Many growers are skeptical though. Top of mind are the unknown risks of sharing vulnerable data. Where will it end up? Who will see it? How will they use it?

This is the same problem we faced over a decade ago when crafting ApRecs.

In 2011, we sat down at the table with a group of growers and advisors and listened to shared concerns regarding record keeping.

Then, we jumped in the truck. We walked in the orchards. We saw first-hand the difficulties of day-to-day farm management. We took that experience and got to work.
