Back-to-school season brings a shift in routine and a busier inbox.

It’s a great time for a quick cybersecurity refresher. Before clicking a link or responding to an unusual request, take a moment to look at the full message. A few extra seconds can help you spot something that does not belong:

👉The sender’s full email address is suspicious
👉Misspelled names or unusual wording
👉Links that do not match the expected website
👉Requests for passwords or payment information
👉Messages pressuring you to act immediately
👉Login pages with unfamiliar web addresses
👉Email signatures that look different than usual

Think of it as the easiest assignment you will get all year: slow down before you click. 📝🎒

Cybercriminals have discovered that people really love scanning QR codes.

Microsoft’s latest email threat report found an increase in phishing campaigns that use QR codes and fake CAPTCHA pages to steal login credentials. Because the QR code moves the victim from a work computer to a phone, it can also make the scam harder for traditional email protections to follow.

Before scanning a QR code from an unexpected email, pause and ask:

Who sent this?
Why do they need me to scan it?
Could I reach the same page through the company’s official website?

A QR code is simply a link wearing a tiny square disguise. Treat it with the same caution you would any other link.

AI tools are becoming part of everyday work, sometimes before a company has decided how employees should use them.

Someone needs help summarizing a document, drafting an email or analyzing information. They find a convenient AI tool, paste in company data and keep moving.

The intention is usually harmless. The risk depends on what was shared, which tool received it and how that information may be stored or used.

IBM found that 63 percent of organizations surveyed did not have an AI governance policy. That means many employees are being asked to make judgment calls without clear guidance.

Your AI policy does not need to be a 47-page document that nobody reads. It should clearly explain which tools are approved, what information cannot be entered and who employees should ask when they are unsure.

A few clear rules can prevent a very complicated problem.

“It’s broken” is a perfectly understandable description of a technology problem.

A few extra details can help us solve it faster.

What were you trying to do?
What happened instead?
Did you receive an error message?
Is it affecting anyone else?
And our personal favorite: Do you have a screenshot?

You do not need to speak fluent IT before calling the help desk. Tell us what you noticed, even if it seems unimportant. We’ll ask the questions and figure it out together.

That’s what support is for.

Here is an uncomfortable question for a Wednesday:

If your server failed this morning, how long would it take to get everyone working again?

Having a backup is a great start. A complete recovery plan also considers where the backup is stored, how often it runs, whether it is protected from ransomware and when someone last tested a full restoration.

CISA recommends maintaining offline, encrypted backups and testing them regularly.

Because “the backup probably works” is not especially comforting when the original files are gone.

WGTech can help you build and test a recovery plan based on how your business actually operates.

Every laptop, phone and workstation connected to your company is another door into your environment.

Endpoint security helps protect those doors through monitoring, access controls, updates and the ability to identify suspicious activity quickly. This is especially important as employees work from home, travel and connect from locations outside the traditional office.

Your network is no longer limited to four office walls and that means your security strategy shouldn’t be either!

Summer is peak vacation season, but it's also a busy time for cybercriminals. That’s because they know employees are out of the office, inboxes are less monitored and things are a little more relaxed in general.

We recommend following this checklist in preparation:

✔ Install the latest security updates
✔ Enable multi-factor authentication
✔ Confirm your backups are running successfully
✔ Remind employees how to spot phishing emails and verify unusual requests

A little preparation now can help prevent a much bigger headache later.

Some of the most expensive IT problems start with, "It's still working, so let's keep it for now."

Outdated hardware, unsupported software, and aging infrastructure can create security risks, downtime, and unexpected costs.
