New work for the Carroll County Public Library

We remain devoted to telling the entire history of the Union Mills Homestead.

Priss, an enslaved girl held here and liberated by the 1864 Maryland Constitution, is now permanently commemorated in our museum with a new interpretive panel derived from a rare original photograph in our collection.

This project was made possibly by a grant from the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, a certified heritage area of the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority.

Halfway through our filming trip in Mozambique and these stories have been full of gratitude for ChildFund, yet honest about the ongoing challenges. Child sponsorship continues to make a meaningful difference in these communities as we’ve met families who:

🏫 Once attended school under a tree and are now in a block building.

💧 Walked for hours to fetch water only to find it dirty and unsafe to drink but now have access to a solar powered well.

👧 Daughters who would’ve been married at the age of 12 (or younger) but now get to attend school instead.

The work is far from done but these communities are now empowered to grow, learn and thrive.

Grateful to spend time with Castigo today. At only 4 years old he’s faced death, violence, hunger and abandonment… to be honest, he’s lucky to be alive. It was an honor to hear his story and be able to leave a portrait with him and his great Aunt who his now raising him.

No baa’d ideas, here! Lisa is a first-generation sheep farmer and entrepreneur, known for her quality candles and soaps for sale around town. She’s also a staunch partner of our local 4H scene. No wool over our eyes, this was clearly a quintessential Carroll County story that we wanted to support, and come alongside her work to empower other young farmers in our community.

Hey Westminster is proud to help fund and share this meaningful public art project for the new family homeless shelter in Westminster for Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. ! Through this HW grant, and community support, talented local artists created uplifting murals designed to inspire hope, healing, dignity, and belonging for families experiencing housing insecurity.

This project is a beautiful example of how community partnerships and the arts can transform shared spaces into places of encouragement and connection. We can’t wait to hear more how these murals bring warmth and hope to families served by Human Service Programs of Westminster!
