DaedTech is the umbrella under which I, Erik Dietrich, offer a variety of services and products. On the product side, most of what I do is oriented around training material and books. On the service side, I write for hire about tech topics, offer IT management consulting, and do (and subcontract) some application development. I'm also starting to specialize in an emerging niche wherein I help client contacts at companies make business cases for strategic decisions that they want to make.

I continued with content in my "SEO for Non-Scumbags" series. This one takes a look at the 3 phases (plus a phase 0) of organic campaigns. If you're looking for insights about how to do keyword research as a function of your site's age, maturity, and domain authority, that's what I cover here.

Don’t look now, but it seems like I’m in real danger of finishing this series of posts. One day, I might even become a blogger again.

It's been a while, but I've got some new content on the blog today!

In this post, I continue my "SEO for Non-Scumbags" series and do an introduction to the tactical details of keyword research. This is the methodology that I've developed and that Hit Subscribe has adopted and trained people to use, and it's helped us earn clients many millions of visitors through search engines.

If you're interested in the details of how that works, I walk through it in this post.

More content today, in keeping with a cadence that one can only describe as “halting, at best.” But, in spite of my failings, on we go with the SEO for non-scumbags series.

New content today on the blog.

I'm continuing the "SEO for Non-Scumbags" series that will serve as the basis for training people to do account strategy for Hit Subscribe. This is the chapter where I start to get into tactics and tangible advice.

Understanding what a keyword is and how to pick one is really a matter of understanding who your searchers are, what motivates them, and how to help them.

If that sounds interesting, here's the post:

So far in this SEO for non-scumbags series (first post and index here), I’ve spent two posts making the case for SEO to a skeptical audience and laying some strategic groundwork. Now it’s time to talk specifics and move to the more tactical.

New content today on DaedTech.

This is chapter 2 in my "SEO for Non-Scumbags" series, which is about applying game theory to going after organic traffic, and turning a highly tactical pursuit (SEO) into a strategic one (earning well qualified traffic, cost-effectively).

It's called "Game Theory in SEO: Building a Ship of Strategy in a Sea of Tactics"

I’ve spent the last 4 years absolutely immersed in the world of SEO, largely with one simple goal in mind. I’ve wanted to make Hit Subscribe’s clients happy by bringing well qualified traffic to their websites.

Now that we've done some hiring and backfilling, I've got time to create content again, and I'm enjoying it.I'm starting...

Now that we've done some hiring and backfilling, I've got time to create content again, and I'm enjoying it.

I'm starting a new sub-series of my ongoing "business of freelancing" content, this one about digital marketing and specifically SEO and earning organic traffic. It's called SEO for Non-Scumbags."

As I backfill myself doing client account strategy, this is the material that I'm going to be teaching the account strategists. I'll distill it into videos and SOPs, but this is the long-form version that I'm having fun writing. Follow along, if you like.

Editorial note: hi folks! Thanks for your patience as I’ve been getting my life settled enough to start creating content again. We’ve done some hiring for a few roles, backfilling me, so I’m actually seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for creating DaedTech content.

Some interesting stuff happening this week:

1. We're launching a new community, sponsored by Hit Subscribe and all engineers are welcome to join.

2. I'm giving away my book, Developer Hegemony, to anyone that joins the community.

If you're interested in the details, I offer a retrospective on the book, 4 years later, and details about the community and how to join in this post: https://daedtech.com/developer-hegemony-revisited-and-a-free-copy-if-you-like/

The community is for engineers with an interest in side hustling and eventually building an independent business. You don't need any immediate plans -- just interest in the topic. In the book, Developer Hegemony, I agitate for software engineers to leave large organizations and go into business for themselves, to have more optionality and career leverage.

So if you know someone that would be interested in the community and/or the book, please feel free to share.

And looking forward to seeing you in the community.

So I suppose it’s old enough that I need to start giving it away for free, right? Like the way really old books and classical music are somehow free? I’m pretty sure that’s how it works, but, whatever, I don’t make the rules.

It's been a while, and thanks for your patience as I adjust to life with a new baby. But, there's content back on the site!

I took a deep dive into whether Twitter makes sense as a marketing channel in the world of , using my own tweet and follower data.

Is it a good channel for an automated or semi-automated funnel?
The gist?

It can be a cost effective marketing platform, provided you invest tens of thousands of dollars of cash or labor. If you don't want to make that investment you should probably skip it and focus on other things.

Editorial note: hello after a long absence, folks! I am genuinely sorry (though not apologetic, per se) that it’s been so long.

New content today on the blog!

If you're a freelancer, "I do good work" is both a great policy and an awful positioning statement. It's what you say when you don't actually understand why people pay you. You need to fix this.

https://daedtech.com/why-i-do-high-quality-work-is-both-good-policy-and-terrible-positioning/

In a relatively recent post, I teased writing about the “attractive nuisance” of freelancers and aspiring business owners branding their work as “high quality.” And now I’m going to do just that. I think this is important.

I managed to create a blog post where the most clickbait-y title ever is actually what I'm offering in the post.

I'd say the catch is the trick may be "weird," but it sure isn't easy. And it comes with absolutely 0 guarantee.

https://daedtech.com/check-out-this-one-weird-trick-for-entrepreneurial-success/

I finally created a blog post title so tongue-in-cheek that it came back around the other side of the screen, like in PacMan, and is actually kind of true. Hear me out.

New content on the blog today! Publishing a draft I had from before our baby came a little early.

Marketing isn't as much about *getting* people's attention as about *keeping* it, over time, until they're in a buying mood.

https://daedtech.com/marketing-101-marketing-isnt-what-you-think-it-is-freelancers/

I’ll admit that I’ve been beating around the bush for some time in my business of freelancing series. Ever since my sales 101 primer, you all have been asking me to talk about marketing.
