Happy Earth Day!
The term "Sustainability" sometimes catches a bad rap. But its what farmers have learned to do since man first changed from Hunter/Gatherer to agrarian. Its living with the environment so that you both can benefit the most for the future. Its a long term course of action, not a near sighted shortcut to an end product.
As hobby farmers ourselves, we understand a bit about how to work with our land while utilizing technology to help us do it efficiently for the long haul. In the same way we use man-made tanks and ponds to help store extra rain to allow the surrounding wildlife and plants to continue to prosper even during dry times, we also harness the energy of the sun to power our home and farm. Solar lighting gives our livestock and pets light at night from batteries the sun charges during the day. This both decreases our carbon footprint (good for the community and the environment) as well as lowering our electric needs (which helps lower our bill). Solar panels help in an even larger way, not only offsetting the costs and our need from the power company, but also allow us to use different vehicles and tools that are electric powered. We embrace the hard earned knowledge passed down by other farmers who have come before us, while adding our knowledge of technology to take things to the next step of partnership between the past and the future.
