Last week, October 30th, we said goodbye to our Callie 🌈🐾 She was 16 years old and her first two years were rough as she was adopted and returned to the shelter 3 times before we adopted her, but she had 14 amazing years with her forever family.

We adopted Callie 2 months after we moved to Asheville, NC and she was the bestest friend for our first fur baby Ellie. They were inseparable, keeping each other company and getting each other into trouble. Ellie had the smarts and Callie was her loyal partner in crime. Callie and Ellie were there for our first house, Grayson, moving to Charlottesville, VA, moving to Jackson, TN, Emory, and moving to Williamsburg, VA- and every adventure in between. We were all devastated when Ellie passed shortly after moving in 2019 and Callie lost her best friend. Ellie was my shadow and Callie was Serg’s shadow.

Callie lived much longer than any of us ever thought she would. Even in her old age, she welcomed two kittens into our family last year and jumped around like a puppy to play with them on occasion. Our hearts and home are empty with Callie gone. We know she is reunited, frolicking, and causing mischief with Ellie and one day we will see our fur babies again 💕

I’ve been reminiscing lately to March of last year when I successfully defended my interior design masters thesis. I poured my heart and soul into my thesis, Reviving a Revival: Modernizing Colonial Revival Homes in Williamsburg, Virginia. What started as wondering how other neighbors remodeled their colonial revival houses turned into a masters degree and my final thesis research. In true Bryn fashion, I took what seemed like a simple research topic and ended up creating my own theoretical framework for how colonial revival houses are modernized.

The short version:
Colonial inspired architecture and design have become one of the most popular residential styles in American history. Historic styles are well documented and well researched, however, the modern Colonial Revival interpretations of the last 75 years are not discussed or researched. Gaps in the literature on studies of vernacular Colonial Revival houses, include both the lack of research on modern Colonial Revival houses and the fact that the Colonial Revival style is constantly evolving. This qualitative study aims to explore the lived experience of residents and the evolution of Colonial Revival architecture and design in the Kingspoint Neighborhood in Williamsburg, Virginia.

This qualitative study explores 17 Colonial Revival houses in the Kingspoint Neighborhood utilizing a synergistic combination of qualitative research methods. The findings reveal the lived experience of residents and their vernacular homes that is guided by questions of how and why residents design and renovate their homes. The Colonial Revival homes are a Colonial palimpsest, which is the layers of history and influences present in Colonial Revival homes. The Colonial Palimpsest is continually created through the layers of styles, architectural and design details, colors, and layout. These layers are being updated through a modern interpretation to fit the function of our modern lives of family, modern conveniences, lifestyle, and pets. The function changes over time as layout and room usages change to better fit the current season of life. Historical vertigo, the sensation of experiencing multiple historical influences simultaneously, is experienced when interacting with the Colonial Palimpsest. The historical vertigo is the experience of witnessing the influence of Colonial and Colonial Revival design, Colonial Williamsburg, the evolution of the neighborhood, and decolonizing Colonial architecture and design, which feeds the modern interpretation of Colonial design and creates a feedback loop of continuous iterations. This process is reviving the revival.

“Grief is the last act of love we give to our loved one.
Where there is deep grief there is great love.” And this was a great love ❤️
Last night my beloved mom passed on. The past 80 days have been filled with devastation and heartbreak as well as joy and laughter as we learned of her stage 4 metastatic cancer, caretaking through her last months, hours gathered as a family, and the grief of losing someone so special 💔
She was the mom I needed, deserved, and chose, who gave her love to me willingly, unconditionally, and wholly, and was the grandma (Gingy) my kids needed and deserved. I can’t fathom a world without her right now.
In the Cherokee language we do not have a word for “Goodbye” instead we say “Until we meet again.” I will not say goodbye, it will always be until we meet again- Donadagohvi 💕 I love you forever and ever

There are people who you have an instant connection with and even as time passes, as you change and grow, that connection persists.
I met in 2013 when I started planning and designing her wedding in Asheville, NC and instantly I connected with Joanna and her vibrant spirit. It’s been 10 years since I last saw Joanna but we’ve stayed connected through social media. After hurricane helene, I happened to see Joanna evacuated to Atlanta and I would be in Atlanta at the same time. I took a chance and reached out to see if she would want to get together and she said yes.
It was truly soul filling to reconnect with Joanna. Our kids loved playing with each other and it was beautiful to witness their newly formed connection. My heart has been breaking for WNC and I can only imagine the immensity of the situation and emotions Joanna is dealing with. To connect with someone else who loves those mountains as much as I do, who calls those mountains home was needed for my soul and hers.
I can’t magically clean up and rebuild WNC but I can reconnect and let those I know who are traveling this road that I see you, I hear you, and I send you strength, a safe space to just be, and empathy. To move through these difficult times look for glimmers, those tiny, seemingly insignificant moments when you feel a sense of joy, pleasure, peace, and gratitude. Joanna you are a true glimmer and I hope we were a glimmer for you too ✨

Hello Portland, Oregon 👋 Excited (and I’ll admit a little nervous) to be attending the Environmental Research Design Association conference! Already started this morning with an amazing session and felt a sense of belonging among others who are passionate about design and the built environment as I am! Looking forward to learning, meeting, and presenting my research poster!
Let me know where I have to visit or eat in Portland before I leave!
