Saving and Sharing Your Love

Our founder tells the story like this:

In the spring of 2007 he stopped at the convenience store at the corner of Market St. and Military Cutoff in Wilmington NC. It was his daily stop for a cup of convenient store coffee. As he was standing at the counter waiting to pay, he started a conversation with a young (early 20’s) lady that was standing there also. She was holding the hand of her 2 year old little girl. He says he remembers looking at the little girl and seeing her pretty eyes. He made a little comment about how proud her daddy must be. The young woman looked at him and calmly stated that “He is no longer with us.” It must have been obvious to her that he didn’t understand and the truth was that he immediately wondered what kind of person would get a girl pregnant and then abandon her. She calmly stated, “He died in Iraq two years ago.” Besides feeling horribly stupid, he was tongue tied. He is and has been a Professional Salesman for almost 40 years. He is not the type to get tongue tied or lose control of a conversation. He said He didn’t know what to say. Finally, he looked at her and asked if her daughter had ever met her father. She shook her head and said “NO”. He said the only words that came out of his mouth were “Make sure your daughter knows her Daddy was a HERO!” She said she would and he walked out. That short encounter has changed his life. He said he left the store and didn’t feel good about what had just occurred but let it go and drove home. He didn’t dwell on it, he said he just went about his life. Two nights later, he said he woke up in the middle of the night and said to himself, “I can fix that problem so that it doesn’t happen again” and wrote some notes on a pad by his bed. My Life Marker was born, so that we can always let our loved ones know how much WE REALLY DO LOVE THEM.
