Honestly? They do — until they don't.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: spreadsheets scale exactly as far as ONE person's memory. As long as the owner holds the whole shop in his head, it works great.

The break comes when the shop gets busy enough that no single person sees everything anymore. Then the spreadsheet isn't the truth — it's a slightly outdated copy of it. And everyone's got a different copy. 😵

And smaller shops feel it hardest, because they've got the LEAST spare office time to burn on chasing status.

Which is to say: probably not very.

One wrong revision. One full week gone. 😩

It's never dramatic. The customer changes a dimension → sales updates the estimate → drafting updates the drawing → but the cut list on the floor was printed Monday, and it's now Wednesday.

Nobody messed up. The info just lived in two places and only one was current.

Material, machine time, labor — spent twice. Plus a delivery date you now have to renegotiate.

The fix isn't "be more careful." It's one job record the floor pulls from live. ✅

Most software asks a guy running a CNC to navigate menus like an office worker. Of course he stops using it.
