Remember how we said you’d wanna be careful what you said in private Facebook Groups because even though it feels private- your posts can absolutely become public? Whether it’s a member who doesn’t like you or a family member of the person you’re posting about- nothing is private in the world of the online web.
Meta is makin’ a change where they are now asking to highlight private group member’s posts that have done particularly well to showcase to potential group members to get them to join.
Groups are the best thing Facebook has going for it right now, but, to avoid spam accounts, many group admins have turned their public groups to private makin’ it harder for new folks to wanna join a group. Someone happening upon “Western Prince William Chatter” can probably assume, from the name, that it’s a local group made up of locals who like to talk, but there are a lot more ambiguous names out there where you might not know what the group is about.
Now, when you click to a group to join, it’ll show you some highlighted posts that you can read through before joining the group. A way to familiarize yourself with the content before answering the group questions and requesting to join.
Right now- your name won’t show and it’ll just say “Group Member”, but it doesn’t say that will always be the case. You currently have the option to deny a post from being showcased, but who knows if that option will stay around or not.
So far, I have a local community group I admin that is giving me the option for this, and it’s pretty interesting. The posts it wants to show are the drama filled ones that get a lot of group engagement.
Think about this the next time you wanna join a group and talk about “I have this client who is the WORST at paying ontime” posts because those can come back to bite ya.
Just like anything with Meta, they are just testing this out and they can pull it at any time.
