We see three paths in the market right now. Some organizations stay on VMware and manage costs more tightly. Some move to HCI platforms like Nutanix. A growing group adopts alternatives like Proxmox VE or Hyper-V.

Each path changes your data protection requirements. What shouldn't change is your backup vendor, because a hypervisor migration is already enough of a project without adding a backup migration on top.

DPX protects VMware, Nutanix Acropolis, Proxmox VE, and Hyper-V, alongside physical servers, from a single platform. Backups stay immutable and recovery stays fast regardless of which direction your infrastructure takes.

For the business, that removes one variable from a complex decision and one project from the roadmap.

Last post in our DPX 4.16 series covers the tape library management in the web UI that has been significantly expanded, with tape registration, import and export slot management, and automated library scans, plus a library view that refreshes more frequently without navigating away and back.

What was previously called volume move is now consistently labeled volume migration across the vStor interface, with migration tasks visible in the global task list, complete with estimated completion time, throughput, and suspend and resume support.

Mounted images now support restoring files to SMB shares using relative paths, building on the RAW file restore introduced in vStor 4.15.

And updating DPX no longer means tracking separate ISOs for every appliance and deployment type. A single unified update artifact and script now covers all of them.

That's the end of the DPX 4.16 series. Full recap coming next!

Third in the series: Administrators can now override the vStor volume used during a Multi-VM restore, allowing recovery from any volume that holds the required data. This matters most in disaster recovery scenarios, where the original volume information is no longer available in DPX, such as restoring from an archive.

Block Archive restore is now available in the web UI, with full feature parity to the previous implementation. VMware Archive restore has also moved to the web UI, and is now integrated with the Multi-VM restore workflow, combining what used to be separate job definitions into one restore flow.

Rapid Return to Production (RRP), the part of a VMware restore job that migrates data to its new location, can now be tracked and monitored just like any other job, even across processes that run for hours in large environments.

One more post to come in the series!

Second in our DPX 4.16 series, and this one is for compliance and security. vStor now logs REST and system level actions, across both the web UI and backend. Configurable retention, filtering, and CSV export, so the log can be shaped around your own audit or investigation process.

Two more posts on this release series still to come!

First in our DPX 4.16 series: DPX adds a new job type for Proxmox virtual machines, covering full and incremental backups to vStor, full VM restore, backup job scheduling, and node management, all from the web UI. This extends the workflows used for VMware, Hyper-V, physical servers, and cloud workloads.

DPX 4.16 also adds backup and restore support for VMware virtual machines encrypted with a Virtual Trusted Platform Module (vTPM), extending compatibility to security hardened VM configurations.
More from this release coming this week.

Proxmox Backup Server covers a Proxmox-only environment well. The real question is what happens once Proxmox stops being the only thing you're running. Maybe there's a VMware migration in progress. Maybe you still have physical servers to protect. Maybe some of your data has to be retained for seven to ten years under audit requirements.

We've laid out how DPX fits into that picture, including how agentless Proxmox backup works, what changes once vStor is the storage layer underneath it, and where PBS is still the better fit.

DPX 4.16 is officially available, and businesses running mixed virtualization environments have a lot to gain from it!

- Proxmox is now a supported agentless workload, joining the enterprise-grade workflows already available for VMware, Hyper-V, physical servers, and cloud workloads.
- vStor adds end to end audit logging, giving you the retention and reporting needed for compliance.
- Multi-VM restore is now more flexible, recovering data even when original volume information is missing.

DPX has protected VMware environments for years, and the mechanics matter. As a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, Catalogic delivers agentless backup through VADP, Change Block Tracking for fast incrementals, and Instant VM Restore that boots machines directly from snapshot storage in minutes.

The cost side matters just as much right now. DPX consolidates backup, storage, and recovery into a single platform. The vStor software-defined repository replaces dedicated backup appliances and comes included with DPX, with no additional licensing.

The business outcome: your VMware workloads stay protected, recovery stays measured in minutes, and your data protection spend stays predictable while the rest of the stack is in motion.

Most IT environments run more than one hypervisor. VMware as the primary platform, Hyper-V on older Windows Server infrastructure, and often Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, or OpenStack added through growth, acquisitions, or cost initiatives. That mix is close to the norm.

The problem: most backup solutions are optimized for one platform and bolted onto the rest. IT teams end up juggling separate tools, policies, and recovery procedures depending on where a VM lives. During an incident, that complexity costs time, and sometimes data.

Our latest blog post breaks down why multi-hypervisor backup is harder than it looks, and how DPX handles it, native integration with VMware, Hyper-V, and Proxmox VE, one vStor storage target for all of them, consistent RPO and retention policies across platforms, and GuardMode ransomware detection covering every workload. All without standardizing on a single hypervisor or rearchitecting what's already there.

For companies that handle sensitive client data, backup encryption is a baseline requirement, not a nice to have. Without it, compliance becomes a risk and client trust is on the line.

One data processing company was running legacy backup software that lacked encryption and gave their team little visibility into what was actually being protected. They needed a solution that could meet their security requirements and be managed without significant overhead.

With DPX and vStor, they got encryption at rest, clear visibility into storage and backup jobs, and a single interface for both on-site and off-site backups. They're now consolidating file and VM backups onto a single platform, phasing out their legacy software in the process.
