A panel of executives from companies including Amazon, LG, and Pepsi shared their thoughts about the changing commercial electric vehicle market at the recent ACT Expo. They asserted that the conversation has shifted from scaling networks to how to deliver charging and energy to fleets most efficiently.

Fleming County Schools in Kentucky received its first electric bus in April 2024 and the resulting savings are remarkable: "The district now operates 24 electric buses alongside three propane and seven diesel buses. Transportation Director Kerri Marshall said the difference in operating costs is stark. Electric buses run at about 13 cents per mile compared to roughly 55 cents per mile for diesel. In practical terms, the district spent approximately $240,000 on diesel and propane fuel in the 2021 to 2022 school year, and $280,000 the following year as prices climbed. Then, over 15 months from August 2024 to November 2025, the district spent just $67,000 to operate 17 buses. Marshall puts the annual savings at around $200,000."

Another impressive benefit of adopting an EV fleet? The ability to take advantage of vehicle to grid technology (V2G). "A single electric school bus battery can power an average home for several days. A fleet of them becomes a distributed energy asset."

This enables EV fleet batteries to send stored energy back to the electrical grid during peak demand hours. Not only can this come in handy as a backup power source during emergencies, but districts can take advantage of this benefit as an additional revenue stream.

There is an increasing opportunity to invest in the global electricity grid. We're going to need it to support economic growth and future prosperity. From a J.P. Morgan report: "In the U.S., grid investment is expected to hit ~$1 trillion over the coming decade, split between transmission (37%) and distribution (63%). U.S. private capital indicates investors also see a growing opportunity, with volumes increasing from $3.2 billion in 2021 to $6.6 billion in 2025." โšก
