Ecto Containment Unit Update

We've been working on this ECU kit for over two years now.

Initially, it was just a simple, push button kit, make individual sounds, and that's it. But in true Pixel Props Store fashion, that wasn't enough and there was room for improvement. Much more room.

The first iteration of this used an Arduino Nano. Then we saw the value and fun of having some mobile functionality. So version 1 was scrapped and the microprocessor was replaced with an ESP32.

After having watched the ECU scene from the 1984 movie over and over again, we decided to add a bunch of other features such an EPA shutdown sequence, a “We Got One” alarm, Slimer sounds, the Ecto 1 siren, and the ability to trigger smoke kits and do venting during the EPA Shutdown.

The bigger this project got, the more we had to put it on the back burner to make room for everything else we’ve worked on in the last two year. It feels like we’re finally rounding the corner on this as we’ve completed, what we’re calling, the final iteration of the Ecto Containment Unit PCB. We’ll be releasing a video soon with a full walk through of all of the features, and a demo hopefully by the end of the summer.

With so many price increases due to the newly implemented tariffs, the price is still very much up in the air. Originally when we began this, the WavTrigger soundboard was the only planned sound option priced at around $35. Now that same board is over $60. This forced us to rethink the sound options to try to keep the price point lower for budget builds. Our very own SoundPixel soundboard using the DFPlayer will be one option giving you great sound at a lower price. The WavTrigger will be the real treat, though, giving you polyphonic sound overlays and constant ECU hums and sounds.

Feel free to browse around and check out all of the features and notes. A lot of work went into this kit and we know a lot of people have waited a long time for it. We wouldn’t be doing it if we couldn’t do the absolute best job we can on it so we really hope everyone is as excited as we are.

Store update....

Due to newly implemented tariffs and rising shipping cost, Pixel Props Store has made the difficult decision to adjust the prices of all circuit boards and electronic kits.

This decision wasn't made lightly. We've tried hard to keep our products reasonably priced and affordable. The price adjustment won't be much, but could fluctuate if the tariffs are adjusted again.

As of May 14th, 2025, the current rate is about 55-87.5%. This means there is an additional cost at that rate on top all my circuit board orders. This hasn't fluctuated for a while, so we feel comfortable locking that in for now.

What this will mean is most circuit boards will be adjusted $5 to $10. Electronics kits will be adjusted based on the total of the newly priced circuit boards.

Again, this wasn't what we hoped for, but there have been so many of you that have reached out asking when things would be back in stock, this is really the only path forward.

So having said all of that, we've reordered a number of circuit boards including everything for the PKE kits and Ecto Goggles. If you're waiting for those to get back in stock, please head over to the website and sign up for in-stock notifications. They should be in sometime next week.

Thank you everyone for your support!

Please read.

It's unfortunate that I have to write this, but very soon we may have to shutter operations for a bit.

My circuit board supplier has just implemented tariff taxes at a rate of 175%. This is adding a significant additional cost to my purchases. We expect a lot of our parts suppliers to follow suit soon.

This forces us to either increase our prices or shutter things for the time being until tariffs are resolved or the tax comes down. We do not agree with increasing our prices and passing this along to our customers. Some of the kits would see as much as a $75 to $100 increase.

There are some things we have in stock still and we can sell those until we run out. However, there are many things that we've run out of and can't restock at this time.

Anyone that has an outstanding order, you're fine and will be getting your kits.

We'll be continuing to prototype the ECU since we have some boards we can work with, but moving forward on that as we expected will definitely be halted until this is resolved. This will also be the case with the newly announced SoundPixel board.

If you have any questions or thoughts, please feel free to reach out.

Read more about this project below.⁣

A problem came about as we have been finalizing some of the sound engineering for the Ecto Containment Unit kit we're developing. Originally, we had planned on using only the WavTrigger with the ECU kit. The WavTrigger can support multiple sounds at the same time, so you'll have a low rumbling, constant, mechanical hum with sounds layered on top of that and it sounds amazing. The problem with the WavTrigger is that the price for those has gone up to around $60+ for one soundboard. This adds a lot of extra cost to the ECU kit. For budget builds, this may not be doable. So we're refactoring our code to work with two different soundboards so people can choose; The WavTrigger or the DFPlayer. ⁣

With all of the projects we've worked on over the years, there's one thing that has remained frustrating when it comes to working with audio: the DFPlayer. A quick search will show you that people constantly have problems with them. Either they aren't authentic and simply don't work, or some of the pins are dead, or you aren't sure how to test them without completely wiring them up. And if you've worked with a DFPlayer, chances are, you know exactly what we're talking about here.⁣

This board hopes to solve some of those issues and make the DFPlayer a much easier soundboard to work with. ⁣

Here are some of the features:⁣
- The DFPlayer can simply snap in and out of the board easily. ⁣
- Various 5V connections to fit your project.⁣
- A 5V passthrough to power your microprocessor or other devices.⁣
- 3mm audio jack for headphones or to connect to an amplifier.⁣
- Multiple audio out options (both amplified and unamplified).⁣
- A "test' button to quickly identify if your DFPlayer is working properly.⁣
- Two ways to connect UART Serial connections.⁣
- Two button out connections to use the DFPlayer without a microprocessor (Arduino, ESP32, etc).⁣
- Busy pin connection for reading when a file is being played.⁣

This board is really great for quick prototyping or can be used with a fully built out project as an easy connector for your audio needs. You can complete the audio connections for your project without any soldering at all.⁣

We're hoping to start shipping these by sometime in May 2025.⁣

Ecto Goggle orders are starting to go out this week!
Very Exciting!

As we’ve been assembling these, we noticed something had changed between shipments of the microprocessor and screen and it looks like it's only a small batch of them.

The small, black spacer that is on the header pins is slightly shorter on one of the batches. This makes the screen sit lower on the PCB. It’s only about 0.3mm, but that is enough to make the screen cover buttons almost impossible to press. We’ve tweaked the screen cover STL slightly to accommodate for this and are posting this to download for free in case anyone needs it.

https://pixelpropsstore.com/gbfans-longer-button-stems

This is really only affecting the GB Fans model because the screen cover buttons don’t have as much room to “press” on this model. The Goon model the buttons have plenty of room and are able to press lower than the GB Fans.

If anyone receives an order and you feel like the buttons are too hard to press, just let us know and we’ll send one of these covers out to you free of charge. For the most part, we’ve replaced the screen cover on all of the ones this was a problem with.

We've gotten several comments from customers wanting to print their own inserts for their goggles instead of having someone else do this for them, which we completely understand.

After discussing with C&A Prop Design, we've decided that this was probably the best thing to do because of how many customers already own 3d printers and to save on cost for these kits.

You can now purchase the 3d print files separately to print yourself:

https://pixelpropsstore.com/shop/ecto-goggles-gb-fans-insert-3d-print-files/ (4 printed pieces)
https://pixelpropsstore.com/shop/ecto-goggles-goon-insert-3d-print-files/ (3 printed pieces)

C&A Prop Design is also reducing their price to print these inserts to $30 shipped in the US and $30 + shipping internationally.

We're also offering an assembled version of the kit without the 3d printed insert. This allows you to either purchase the inserts from C&A Props or purchase the 3D printed files and print them yourself. The assembled kits without the insert are $115.

If anyone would prefer to exchange their kit for one without the inserts and purchase the files to print them yourself, we will gladly refund you the difference. Just send us a message and we'll get you taken care of.

We hope this gives everyone plenty of options so that you can get your kit and assemble it the way you'd like.

It was brought to our attention from a customer that there is another 3d model on Thingiverse that is very close to the GB Fans Ecto Goggles shell they are currently selling.

This model is by MakerGulbi and definitely looked very close to the GB Fans shell. So we decided to print off a set, and indeed, our GB Fans insert and electronics for the Light & Sound Kit fit perfectly into this shell with a tiny bit of wiggle room.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5170520

We hope this provides another great option for those that are looking for a good starting place to build your Ecto Goggles. This will be listed as one of the supported Ecto Goggles shells on our website.

Pixel Props Store is proud to offer our Ecto Goggles Light & Sound Kit.

This has been a year in the making and we're very proud of how it turned out. This kit will fit the GB Fans Ecto Goggles Shell and the "Goon" 3D Printed shell from Thingiverse. We will also have a Spirit version coming soon.

We are offering this in two kits;
Assembled ($145) and unassembled ($90).

For more information and to purchase, please visit our website. Please be sure to read all of the details about the assmbled and unassembled kits.

https://pixelpropsstore.com/shop/ecto-goggles-light-sound-kit/

Special thanks to C&A Prop Design for putting this idea in our head!

They will also be helping with the 3D printed inserts for unassembled kits (assembled kits will include them). Contact them on their page or email them at [email protected] if you need an insert for your unassembled kit.

Assembly videos for the unassembled kits coming soon! This kit is very simple to assemble with everything being surface mounted to the PCB or simply inserting the component into the provided mounting holes. You will receive all components with code and sound files ready to go!

If you haven't seen the full kit in action, check out the full demo video here: https://youtu.be/53V7_kEfUjc

Lastly, we are doing backorders for this kit which is something we haven't done before. Some of our parts have international sources and shipping times on components can vary from time to time. We ask that customers wait at least 4 to 6 weeks on their orders for us to make sure all components are available and tested.

As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or need technical support with any of our products.
