Preparing for a Job Fair
Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind when attending a job fair

1. Find out which employers will be attending. (Done!)

2. Dress as if you were going to an actual job interview... because you are.

3. Don’t smoke before or during the job fair.

4. Bring your own pen. (Bring 2 just in case one dries up)

5. Bring many copies of your resume if you have one, or a copy of your job history in case you need to fill out an application

6. Don’t carry too much stuff with you. Carry your resume in a folder or portfolio. It will keep your resume neat and handy

7. Smile when introducing yourself.

8. If you have someone drive you there, send them away and tell them to come back later so they are not pestering you to leave.

9. Do not bring your children, spouse or other relatives along with you; unless they are job-hunting themselves.

10. Speak with as many representatives as possible. Even if they don’t have exactly what you are looking for today... you never know what positions will open in their company next week.

11. Start with the employers that you are least interested in to become comfortable in the Job Fair setting and work the bugs out of your communication skills.

12. Stand near the tables you want to visit, and eavesdrop on the recruiter and the other applicants. You’ll never have a better opportunity to prepare for an interview.

13. Know when to leave the table. Don’t ramble on about subjects not related to what you are looking for.

14. Be ready with a 60 second commercial about yourself answering the question “Tell me about yourself”.

15. Ask for business cards of the individuals you talk with.

16. Send thank you letters/emails to the representatives you met along with any additional materials you promised to send.

From Livingston County Workforce Development:

Job Fair Tomorrow in Geneseo!

Do you know what I hate?
I hate sending an employer a resume and not even knowing if they received it.
I hate filling out an on-line application and having it disappear into digital limbo. (which happen about 80% of the time if you are filling out applications on your cell phone)

This is why job fairs are great!
You can actually talk with employers face-to-face and make a connection.
You can hand someone a copy of your resume or application (if they still have paper ones) or follow-up with an on-line application you previously completed.
You can see multiple employers in one hour.

Employers come to job fairs because they have openings they need to fill, not “Ghost Jobs” that some employers post on-line to collect applications IN CASE an opening happens.

Why not take this opportunity to get out of the house, attend our Job Fair and talk with employers IN PERSON (not virtually or not just filling out a digital application and sending into the electronic abyss).
