If your website is quick most of the time and occasionally takes forever, that's not your imagination. And it's probably not your hosting.

The randomness is the clue.

WordPress doesn't have a proper scheduler. It fakes one. Every time somebody visits, WordPress checks whether a background job is due, and if one is, that visitor's pageload does the work. Backups, emails, tidying up, all of it.

Which means a customer clicking through from your ad can end up sitting there running your admin queue.

We took on a site that was spiking to 40 seconds. Same host, same theme, no changes to either. Moving that scheduling off the pageload took it to a steady 1.2 seconds.

Nobody had done anything wrong. It's just what WordPress does by default, and it gets worse the busier you get.

"What happens if I don't bother with website maintenance?"

Fair question, and the honest answer is nothing at all, for a while.

Then one of 3 things.

Something breaks and you lose sales. A checkout that fails, a form that doesn't send, a site down on the morning your campaign goes out. That money doesn't wander back later.

Somebody gets in and you lose a weekend. Cleaning up a hack costs more than the upkeep would have. Every single time.

Or your rankings drift. Google clocks broken links, slow pages and downtime months before a customer says a word to you. Rankings don't fall off a cliff, they slide, gently, until you're somewhere nobody scrolls.

Ever hit a website and got a full-screen red warning telling you it isn't safe?

That's usually not a hacked site. That's an SSL certificate nobody renewed.

The certificate is what puts the little padlock next to a web address. It proves to a browser that the site is who it claims to be. They expire, normally once a year, and they don't make a fuss on the way out.

When yours lapses, Chrome puts that red screen in front of every single person trying to reach you. It tells them your site isn't safe. Most of them believe it, close the tab, and never mention it to you.

You don't get a complaint. You get nothing.

Do you know when yours expires? Genuine question, most owners don't.

Load-shedding doesn't take your website down. Your host runs generators and a UPS, so the site rides it out quite happily.

It takes you down.

The power goes, the office is dark, your fibre's down and your phone's on 20%. If something broke on your site at 18:00, you'll hear about it at 21:00, from a customer, on a bad connection, with no laptop.

That's why off-site backups and a restore somebody has tested matter more here than they do to an agency in London. What goes offline isn't your website. It's your ability to do anything about it.

And while we're here: a backup sitting on the same server as your site isn't a backup. It's a photocopy stored inside the burning building.

On this day in 1979, Apple started building the Lisa.

It was meant to ship in 1981 at $2,000. It shipped in 1983 at $10,000.

The technology was right. It gave most people their first graphical interface. But it landed 2 years late at 5 times the price, and it flopped. Everything good about it ended up in the Macintosh instead.

Your website project won't fail because the idea is bad. It'll fail because nobody held the date or the budget.

That's the whole reason we quote a number and a date, then stick to both.

Open Meta Business Suite. Check whose name is on your ad account.
