BBM for iPhone & Android clocks up 20 million downloads
BBM for Android and iPhone is now live in Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Here's everything you need to know
BBM for Android and iPhone is now officially here. The IM application took awhile to get official following extensive delays but is now live inside Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store.
Designed as an alternative to IM clients like WhatsApp and Google Hangouts, BBM is one of the better-known messaging applications, enjoying around 60 million users worldwide.
With its release as a cross-platform app, a move confirmed way back in May 2013, BlackBerry will hope to add a substantial number of users to this already impressive figure, although the company has a long way to go before it catches its biggest rival, WhatsApp which currently boasts around 200 million active users.
Below is everything you need to know about BBM for Android and iOS, including video previews, news and everything that happened during the application’s turbulent run up to launch. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you: the BBM saga…
BBM usage surges on Android & iOS, beats LINE and matches Viber
Since launch BBM for Android and iOS has been downloaded some 20+ million times. An impressive figure to be sure, but new research from Mobidia, first published by BGR, shows BBM for Android and iOS either matching or beating two of its main rivals, LINE, Tango and Viber.
“In the week of October 20th, BBM’s engagement was 40 minutes in the United States, moving well ahead of Tango’s 24-minute engagement level. BBM soared ahead of LINE in major European markets and soundly beat its Asian rival by posting European engagement of 59 minutes versus LINE’s engagement of 38 minutes,” reports BGR.
BBM matched Viber’s 44 minutes of engagement levels per week in the US, showing just how popular the cross-platform IM application has been. Add to this BBM’s inability to pull in contacts directly, and you’re looking at some pretty solid performance figures.
WhatsApp is still number one in Europe, however, boasting weekly engagement stats of around 160 minutes per user.
BBM for Android and iOS ditches waiting lists
BlackBerry has revealed it has ditched the waiting lists for its BBM app for Android and iOS.
Previously, users who wanted to use the app had to join a waiting list to be registered, but now it's a straightforward procedure.
