From bustling casino complexes and beachfront hotels to tucked‑away guest houses and Airbnbs, the tourism sector is a vital part of our economy. Unfortunately it has also become a prime target for opportunistic and organised crime.
The Southern African tourism sector has struggled to overcome the perception of crime in the country. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology offers a powerful, practical way to change this – not only by helping to solve incidents after they occur, but increasingly by preventing them in the first place.
Tourism thrives on movement but criminals do too. Here’s how ANPR can help keep South Africa’s tourism industry one step ahead. https://navic.cloud/how-anpr-technology-can-protect-the-tourism-sector/

Gauteng
Community members’ tip off leads to swift arrest

After tenants of the Glenanda Shopping Centre in Johannesburg reported suspicious behavior in and around the centre, the suspect was observed getting into a vehicle which then triggered ANPR cameras in the vicinity. Once the vehicle was later apprehended by SAPS, a large quantity of cash was found and the vehicle was found to be using false number plates. The vehicle was seized and the suspects arrested.
This was a great example of the critical role members of the community play and the need to report suspicious behaviour. Thanks to the tenants of the Glenanda Shopping Centre for being on the ball and assisting in this arrest.

Cape Town
Hiker’s stolen vehicle recovered after high speed chase

In this case, a member of the public returned from a hike to find his vehicle missing. Within 30 minutes, the reported vehicle triggered ANPR cameras and was located on the N2 in Cape Town. The driver failed to stop and a high speed car chase followed. Law enforcement continued and the car was stopped soon afterwards in Epping. On searching the vehicle, phones, computer equipment and some tools were found. The vehicle and suspect were detained for further investigation.

Suspects fleeing in vehicles often think they can shake off the law through high speed, risky driving. Law enforcement officers however are highly trained in such circumstances and as long as members of the public are not at risk, the chase will certainly end badly for suspected criminals. Well done to those involved for bringing this suspect in safely.

South African motorists and insurance companies are always on the lookout for new ways to combat the growing incidence of hijacking. New tracking technology is a vital part of the solution, but neighbourhoods that have NAVIC ANPR have an important additional edge.
NAVIC ANPR can detect and flag a hijacked vehicle even if traditional trackers are disabled, immediately alerting security teams and law enforcement. Because NAVIC also tracks and saves images of vehicles travelling in front of and behind a flagged vehicle, investigators can reconstruct the convoy, identify potential getaway cars, and pinpoint where suspects entered or diverted before the crime was completed. That turns a wide-area manhunt into a focused, time-bound search zone, significantly improving driver safety and the chances of recovering the vehicle and apprehending the hijackers.

Tokai
Bank card scammers arrested after victim’s positive ID

The Tokai area in Cape Town has seen a number of ATM scammers and card fraudsters and another recently tried to strike again, only to be thwarted by the ever vigilant KCW team.
In this case, after a vehicle triggered ANPR cameras, four suspects were apprehended. In their vehicle a bank card and point of sale machine were found. The team made contact with the card owner who later provided positive identification of the suspects who were then arrested for possession of stolen property.
Always be aware of your surroundings any time you are using an ATM or your bank card. Criminals have become bolder and card fraud happens in the blink of an eye. Thanks to the victim who was willing to identify the perpetrators and bring the case to a swift conclusion. Another win for ANPR, SAPS and KCW.

Mi7 Surveillance Net Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle and Arrest of Three Suspects in Allandale

Date: 23 July 2026

Three suspects were arrested and a stolen vehicle recovered in Allandale earlier today after it was detected by the Mi7 Surveillance Net.

Shortly before midday, Mi7 Control Room operators received an alert from the system indicating that a vehicle reported stolen in Richards Bay was travelling through the Brixham Road area.

The Mi7 Surveillance Net is a network of strategically positioned surveillance cameras equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology, covering more than 150 locations in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands.

Mi7 Reaction Officers and members of the Strategic Threat Response Unit (STRU) were immediately dispatched to search for the vehicle. Within minutes, the vehicle was located parked at a property in Allandale Drive and intercepted by Mi7 teams.

Three men found inside the vehicle were apprehended and detained at the scene.

Further investigation established that the vehicle’s disc had allegedly been tampered with. Approximately R14,000 in cash and suspected narcotics of an undisclosed value were also recovered during a search of the vehicle.

The suspects had also allegedly fitted wheel caps from a different vehicle manufacturer in an apparent attempt to alter the vehicle’s appearance and avoid detection.

The three suspects, stolen vehicle, cash and suspected narcotics were handed over to the police for further investigation.

Guardian Defence Security and ANPR bring murder suspects to book
KuGompo, Eastern Cape

In a recent case, a KuGompo businessman was gunned down and murdered inside his business premises. Based on preliminary information from the murder scene, it was established that two suspects entered the victim’s business premises, wearing worksuits, and opened fire on the victim, who suffered multiple fatal gunshot wounds. Following the shooting, the suspects fled to a waiting getaway vehicle.

Following a request for Guardian Defence Security (GDS) to assist with the tracing of the suspects, a multi-disciplinary team comprising GDS and SAPS East London Tactical Response Team (TRT), was assembled and an operational team established.

After thorough intelligence gathering, the operational team was able to establish details about the vehicle used during the commission of the crime.

The operational team then intercepted the suspect’s vehicle within the KuGompo area, and a tactical vehicle stop was performed. The driver of the vehicle was successfully apprehended. An illegal firearm was recovered along with ammunition. Multiple worksuits similar to those worn by the suspects on the day of the hit were also found.

During questioning, the suspect acknowledged his involvement in the murder and agreed to cooperate with the operational team.

The identities of the two outstanding suspects were established and in a follow-up operation, their vehicle was traced and stopped, which was being driven by a second suspect at the time. An illegal firearm and ammunition was found on his person.

A further follow-up operation led the operational team to informal housing within the Duncan Village area, where the third suspect was successfully apprehended.

NAVIC extends thanks to Guardian Defence Security for their significant contribution in the fight against crime and its dedication to making the city safer and leaving nowhere for criminals to hide!

Armed Robbery Suspect Detained Through Excellent Collaboration between KCW and NAVIC
On Thursday, 9 July 2026, at approximately 22:49, a vehicle flagged in connection with an armed street robbery entered the Muizenberg area.
KCW patrollers who were already on patrol received the NAVIC alert and immediately positioned themselves in anticipation that the vehicle might enter their area. By following the live NAVIC alerts, members were able to safely position themselves behind the vehicle and maintain visual contact while keeping a safe following distance.
During the journey, the driver carried out several anti-tracking manoeuvres in an apparent attempt to evade anyone following the vehicle. Despite this, the KCW patroller remained patient and successfully kept eyes on the vehicle all the way to Plumstead Main Road.
The vehicle eventually stopped in Plumstead, where the occupant exited for a period before returning to the vehicle. Additional KCW members positioned themselves strategically to ensure continuous observation while keeping a safe distance. During this time, Wynberg SAPS had been notified and were preparing to intercept the vehicle.
Shortly after the vehicle continued its journey, Wynberg SAPS stopped it. The occupant was questioned and the vehicle searched. During the search, officers located an undeclared imitation ("blank") firearm concealed beneath the driver's seat.
Although possession of an imitation firearm is not necessarily illegal, it is believed that this firearm may have been used during the reported street robbery. The occupant was detained, and the investigation will now continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
A huge thank you to every member who played a role in this operation.Wynberg SAPS , KWC and NAVIC , effective communication, and outstanding inter-platform collaboration proved that working together makes our communities safer.
Well done to KCW, SAPS and everyone involved!
