Every week another AI course builder launches, complete with promises, flashy activities and incredible promotional videos. As a course builder, you end up feeling like the chameleon on a Smartiebox, not knowing which choice to make!

We spent three months prompt-engineering an AI course builder to do what it promised with no luck. We worked with the tool’s developers, refining, testing, re-prompting, rebuilding, over and over again. In the end, we threw the whole lot out and started again with a human learning designer.

Exasperated, we can now say that not every course is suited for the AI course builder - no matter what they promised you. Swipe through to see how we learned which ones can, and which ones definitely cannot be developed by AI.

Shannon is on our success coaching team. Her mornings start with the VITALS Dashboard open, reading which teachers are slipping, in which courses, and where they got stuck. Then she does the part no dashboard can. She picks up the phone and calls the teacher.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐒 𝐃𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦:
- What’s happening in each course on the LMS
- How many students are enrolled / engaged / not-engaged in each course
- The activity completion per unit per course
- Results from assessments in different units and courses
- Course completion rates

These vital bits of information are the key to success coaching. VITALS help you make key decisions, like who to call because they haven’t been active for a week based on their logins and activity completion rates, or who to meet with because their assessment results are consistently low. A call, a WhatsApp, a bit of encouragement from an actual person is often all it takes to move a stalled student back into a course.

This is what success coaching looks like at Limina. The data shows us who needs help. A real person makes sure they get it.

in your Moodle right now, a learner has gone dark. One stopped halfway through a course, another never made it past the first unit, a whole cohort is falling behind.

The hard part was never caring. It's seeing them in time. When hundreds of learners are logging in at all hours, the signs of who's slipping sit scattered across dozens of logs and screens, and by the time you piece them together, they've already gone.

Your courses have vital signs, the same way a hospital patient does. This week's blog shows how to read them at a glance and catch a struggling learner while there's still time to help.

Moodle does a great deal straight out of the box. Sometimes, though, the thing your learning needs doesn't exist yet. That's where our Tech and Innovation team comes in: when a standard Moodle activity can't do the job, we build one that can!

Take our PinBoard plugin. We wanted meaningful asynchronous peer-to-peer learning and the Forum activity didn’t provide this. So we built a visual message board where learners post, respond, and rate each other's thinking, all trackable and gradeable.

Another example is our VITALS Dashboard, our Visual Insights and Tracking of At-risk Learning Signals. This dashboard is added to Moodle to give a bird's-eye view of progress across their whole LMS, flagging drop-off risks early.

We’re extremely proud of Dr Tshepiso Kepadisa, and hugely honoured to be working with this amazing South African woman! Tshepiso is a physical therapist, and recently completed her PhD at SMU, in helping stroke victims. She reached out to us last year to start developing a Moodle LMS to create online courses to train physical therapists, as well as homecare providers, to support patients. It’s been a challenging journey, but one she has embraced with determination, proving that anything is possible - even creating courses on Moodle from a phone!
