"Why would we need a web development agency when AI can build a website for us?"
This conversation has grown louder with the rise of free AI tools and WordPress plugins that promise to create, manage, and maintain websites automatically.
Honestly? We're not worried.
Many AI website builders are being positioned as alternatives to WordPress, Webflow, and Shopify. In reality, they're best suited to basic websites, not the complex business systems built on top of those platforms.
When you're dealing with CRM and ERP integrations, custom workflows, security requirements, multi-country operations, and long-term scalability, businesses aren't looking for the newest or cheapest option. They're looking for reliability, support, accountability, and confidence that the platform will still serve them well years from now.
A simple analogy: when reliability and support matter, do you choose the established option with a proven track record, or the new alternative that's still finding its feet?
When your business depends on the outcome, proven ecosystems and dependable support matter.
AI tools are excellent accelerators, but they aren't a replacement for experienced developers building and supporting mission-critical business systems.
What AI can do:
• Generate layouts and design concepts
• Draft content
• Create basic website structures
• Add standard functionality such as forms, analytics, maps, and videos
• Assist with content management
• Help developers work faster
What AI can't do:
• Operate safely on a live production website without risk
• Understand platform-specific best practices without being explicitly guided
• Build complex CRM or ERP integrations
• Handle sophisticated custom data structures and workflows
• Manage multi-country, multi-language, or enterprise-level platforms
• Take responsibility when something goes wrong
And that last point is the biggest gap of all.
When a website goes down, an integration fails, or data stops syncing, there is no AI support line to call.
Successful website projects require planning, architecture, business analysis, testing, refinement, and technical decision-making. AI still needs experienced people who understand the platform, the business, and the desired outcome.
At RubyWeb, we don't build brochure websites. We build business systems.
Our projects often involve CRM and ERP integrations, custom workflows, multi-language requirements, performance optimisation, and long-term scalability planning.
AI is helping developers work faster and deliver more efficiently. It hasn't removed the need for expertise; it's changed how the work gets done.
The future of web development isn't AI instead of developers. It's developers aided by AI. And that's a very different conversation.
