Vula Medical has passed a significant milestone — our 3 millionth patient referrals!

Not data points, but people. People who needed a specialist, sometimes urgently, and received one.

To imagine that number, 1 out of every 21 South Africans has been involved with Vula Medical as a patient or a health professional.

When we started 12 years ago, Vula Medical had only 367 referrals during all of 2014. At that time, we thought only two types of health professionals—doctors and nurses—would use Vula. Fast forward, and Vula is used daily by 105 different types of health professionals across South Africa, Lesotho, Zambia, Botswana and Eswatini. A patient is now helped every 43 seconds.

More than 45,000 health professionals are registered on Vula!

Our team attended the Rural & Family SAAFP Conference in Gauteng last week!

CEO Dr William Mapham presented on “Improving Access to Specialist Services in Rural Areas.”

One of the highlights was meeting some of the healthcare professionals we’ve worked with for five years or more — for the first time in person! It was a very special moment to connect face-to-face and celebrate the work they have done.

"Vula's changed the way we work."
That's how the Surgery Department at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley describes life with Vula.

For a public hospital serving the Northern Cape — the largest province in South Africa by area — every referral decision carries weight. Distance, transfer costs and clinician availability all sit behind a single referral.

Here's what the team told us has changed:
🔄 Workflow and task-sharing. When the on-call clinician is in theatre, referral management can be handed over to another medical officer without losing continuity — and picked back up again when they're free. As the team put it: "This level of flexibility and task-sharing would not have been possible without Vula."

📵 Fewer interruptions. Fielding phone calls between theatre cases and ER reviews was the most tedious part of being on call. Vula has taken that pressure off.

🚑 Cost savings. Being able to prioritise transfers and referrals more effectively has reduced unnecessary emergency inter-facility transfers — a direct saving for the department.

📋 A clear record. Telephonic referrals were prone to miscommunication and "he said, she said" discrepancies. Vula provides a time-stamped medicolegal record of every clinical discussion, protecting patients and clinicians alike.
