She’s the reason you know the word “voluptuous”. She s*xed-up Happy Birthday. She owned America’s libido in the 1950’s. She put platinum curls, red lips, white dresses and even air vents on the map. When asked about what she wears in bed, she never faltered as a brand ambassador and answered “Why, Chanel No. 5, of course!” Natural beauty and a voice that would make even the most heteros*xual woman doubt her impulses, are just some of the things that made Marilyn Monroe America’s greatest s*x icon. With a sweet personality and heart-of-gold, she was an adored lady of the silver screen. Today marks the anniversary of her death 54 years ago. Though there are still many questions about her untimely death, she’s still the life of the party at any 50’s themed event. So long Norma Jean, though we never really knew you at all.

Today is tomorrow’s history. Thus, logic dictates that if you would like to be part of history, you should act today. With that in mind, we hope that you are reading this on your phone while standing in line to cast your vote for the Local Government Elections. The waiting is no fun, and the permanent marker might clash with your personal style, but it is our right and duty as citizens to participate and take ownership of the governance of our country. So get up and vote M’zansi (If you do it early you’ve got the rest of the day off!) Whoop whoop!

Ah, change. Such a deeply profound occurrence of the natural world. It can be scary, exciting or just taking up space in your wallet. And on top of the fact that the only constant is change, the rate of change increases exponentially. Take for example your studies. By the time you finish your 3-year course, the information is redundant and the associated profession obsolete or automated. So now that we have accelerated your heart rate, dilated your pupils and thrown your entire existence into question, you know exactly how the folks working at radio stations felt on this day in 1981. The birth fathers of the channel were originally met with disdain from the music, television and radio industries. But thanks to one of the most brilliant guerilla marketing campaigns ever employed, cable networks received thousands of phone calls from teens and young adults across America all with the same statement: “I want my MTV!” Caving into market pressured, the channel which revolutionised the music industry launched and gained 92% of the cable market within 6 months. As if that wasn’t bad ass enough, the very first video they aired was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. Classic!

29 July 1958 welcomed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration agency or “NASA”. Yay. Whatever. What most people don’t know, however, is that only 3 days later, on the 32nd of July, a much bigger and elusive agency was established: Secrete NASA or “SNASA”. They have sent people to the SMoon and rovers to SMars. Working there requires more than just the “right stuff”. You require knowledge of sub-zero gravity, slightly dark matter, white holes and the physical stamina to survive the H-force of travelling through the parts of space not owned by the US. At this point you must be wondering why on earth you’ve never heard of these terms (or how dire your need for distraction must be if you’ve gotten this far in the post). Well, the answer lies within the question my dear friend. They’re not based on Earth. Who do you think waters the plants on the International Space Station when everyone’s away?

It has long been known that the British have a tendency towards being party poopers. And no, this is not a reference to the Brexit extravaganza. But rather, on this day in 2003 the BBC officially reported that there is no monster in the Loch Ness. Ugh. What’s next? Santa Clause? Easter Bunny? Phantom-limb syndrome? To paraphrase a particularly dramatic Britney Spears fan: “Leave Nessie alone!” But don’t fret, though the corporation was able to pe*****te the Scottish lake with its cold and unimaginative sonars, there’s one monster they have yet to “disprove”. Living in our very own Howick Waterfall, the Inkanyamba is a serpent with a finned mane and head of a horse. The creature is believed to be most active in summer months when its anger causes seasonal storms. So, BBC, in a very scientific sense, you might have the biggest crown jewel collection, but it’s nothing compared to our snake.

What would you do if we gave you a flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns and a string orchestra? No it’s not the second day of Christmas, and no you cannot exchange them for fruit, hoboes, baboons, French wh**es and a G-string. Well, today in 1788, the 32-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart took to the challenge and completed Symphony No. 40. Booya! You did not see that coming, did you? Don’t feel too bad though, the man was a genius with synaesthesia, which means he actually saw music as colours. RGBB to be exact: red, green, black and blue. Had he only been able to see yellow, he might have been able to translate us the song the South African flag is singing. So. Put that in your pipe smoke it.

The year is 1931. You’re an ex-con maverick sporting an eyepatch and doing the name Post proud, with a lady called Winnie Mae, who rocks your world at 298km/h. You and your girl Mae finish a 7 day, 18 hours and 49 minute session which leaves you lightheaded and 50 000 followers eager to find out just how good it was. That’s right folks, today 102 years ago aviator Wiley Post set the record for the first solo flight around the world in under 8 days. So the next time your friend gets a bit big-headed about his latest Pokémon GO achievement, mumbling words like “stardust” and “levelling up” while running into lamp poles just to “catch’em all”, remind him that travelling around the world is worth way more experience points than going to the park at 3 AM. On a side note. Maybe if we really want space travel to develop, we should place modules on Pluto?

The year is 1969 and maybe just maybe, two men made history. With their flag proudly flapping in zero gravity, the world’s most under-appreciated (or non-existent) cameraman captured Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin taking the first human steps on the set that we now know as the moon. Now, we cannot comment on the validity of American studios, but we can recognise a great copy line and some amazing image manipulation (way before After Effects and Photoshop). So let’s put the “landing” aside for today and salute these brave blockbuster stars. It must have been one bad-ass wrap party.

Happy Nelson Mandela Day! And if you’re reading this in his voice…awesome! But be careful, it’s hard to stop once you’ve started. Conveniently in the middle(ish) of the year, today is the day to reconsider those self-centred New Year’s resolutions you’ve given up on and strive to make a better world. At this point, we usually write something witty but in spirit of a better world and Madiba himself we’d rather direct you to the site which can offer real help http://www.mandeladay.com/ Peace out M’zansi!

On this day 19 years ago, the world lost some of its Italian flair when a 50-year-old was shot and killed outside his South Beach Mansion. So if you should wake to find yourself with a million dollar fashion empire, a former Italian model wondering what time you’ll be home, and a few texts from the likes of Madonna, Elton John and Tina Turner, give us a call, you might just be Gianni Versace incarnate. This Italian is famed for being the first designer to link fashion to the music world and, girlfriend, he was owning it! Known for his metal creations (he even employed a team of Germans to ensure great engineering), the man catapulted Liz Hurley onto the global media stage with “THAT dress” in 1994, using only silk, lycra and a few oversized golden baby pins.

Ok, so this is an age game. When you look at this picture, who do you see? Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: Next Generation? Professor Xavier from X-Men? Or maybe just the guy used in all those memes? If you didn’t get any of these references, then why the hell are you reading our posts? And if you didn’t get the meme joke in the previous sentence, well what a face palm. Anyway, today is Patrick Stewart’s 74th birthday. You went from captain to professor to knight - so much win! Have a good one, old boy! You sure know how to live long and prosper. Yeah, we went there.

“The Sultan of Swat” aka “The Great Bambino” aka “The Behemoth of Bust” aka “The Big Fellow” aka the man with so many great nicknames, he makes headline writers’ toes curl! Yes, ladies, gentlemen and other-gendered, we are talking about the one and only Babe Ruth. On and off the field, this man had more standing O’s than commentators worthy of his victories. Other than being one of the greatest Lefties who ever lived, the beloved “Caliph of Clout” (we don’t know what that means either), was able to leave this earth a legend. Ranked #1 on The Sporting News list of Baseball’s Top 100 players, he was a 7 x World Series Champion, 12 x AL Home Run Champion and the only person to ever walk out on a movie premier about his own life. And on this day, 102 years ago, he made his debut.
