Using a drone to scan barcodes in high warehouses saves hundreds of man-hours during stock-take or physical inventory. The drone flys up to the high shelves and scans the barcodes on each item, as well as the barcode on the shelf. This saves the time and effort of lifting a human up to the high shelves using a forklift or reach truck which can be as high as 8m. There are huge savings to be made in

reducing the effort of manual barcode scanning of high shelves which is both time consuming, dangerous, and energy inefficient. The DroneScan Airborne data collection system uses the latest drone platforms, hardware, software, scanning and communications technology to provide robotic scanning solutions of high shelves in large uniform warehouses. The barcode or RFID reader equiped drones have on-board sensors to keep them within optimal scanning range from the racks and pallets in the warehouse while they scan the item and shelf barcodes. Sensors on the drone provide information to the on-board flight controller to keep it at the correct height to scan the rack and pallet item barcodes in the warehouse. The height of the drone is communicated over a wireless link from the server which uses a database to process the scanned barcodes and send commands to the drone, while building up a list of items scanned in the inventory.

In 2016 Disrupt Africa spoke with Dronescan co-founder Craig Leppan about things such as indoor drone flying with indoor navigation which uses warehouse metrics to guide the drone in spaces where GPS is not available.

Indoor drone flying without GPS can be very intimidating and even dangerous. Dronescan has developed a system that enables drones to be flown safely inside a warehouse.

In 2015 the very popular online publication, Dronelife, interviewed Dronescan co-founder Jasper Pons, to find out a bit more about what Jasper and his team had been working on.

Drones buzzing about warehouses scanning thousands of bins in a fraction of the time that it would take numerous employees to do?? Now that sounds very interesting!

Inventory management hasn’t changed much over the past century — a forklift drives up to a behemoth stack of pallets, the skids pick up the requested pallet or item and the pallet of inventory is is counted, scanned and moved to the proper delivery vehicle. Done. Repeat. However, as they have in...

Dronescan was featured in the online publication Ventureburn, where Jasper Pons highlights the very real benefits and cost savings that can be enjoyed by companies wishing to streamline their existing warehouse management system.

Even though the article was a few years ago all of the benefits discussed herein are still exactly the same. All of our products are continually being improved upon by our R&D technicians.

Now, Durban-based software startup DroneScan is using drones to scan barcoded items in warehouses shelved too high to maximise efficiency.
