Students from Lovedale TVET College together with the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator at Lovedale, visited the Cortex Hub this week as part of an exploratory engagement focused on understanding how technology and finance can be integrated within modern business and innovation ecosystems.

The visiting group consisted of financial management students who are currently studying the financial and operational aspects of enterprise development. During the visit, the students were introduced to practical examples of how digital technologies, data systems, and innovation platforms intersect with financial management in supporting startups, SMEs, and emerging industries.

Through engagements such as this visit, the Cortex Hub continues to position itself as a strategic interface between TVET institutions, industry, and innovation ecosystems. By creating opportunities for students to engage with technology-driven enterprise environments, the Hub helps expose TVET learners to the practical application of their qualifications within digital economies, startup ecosystems, and innovation-led business models.

Credit rationing remains a major barrier to financial inclusion in South Africa, particularly for individuals and small businesses with limited or non traditional credit histories.Traditional credit scoring models exclude large parts of the population by relying on narrow data sets. Open Banking offers an alternative by enabling the use of richer data such as income flows and transaction behaviour, supporting fairer and more inclusive assessments of creditworthiness.

This is why building skills in Open Banking and digital finance matters. Programmes like the FinTech Summer School 2026 equip future fintech leaders to design solutions that expand access to finance and economic participation. This week the participants at the FinTech Lab Summer School
