It’s commonly linked to investor Jesse Livermore or older Wall Street lore:
During a time of sardine scarcity, canned sardines became very valuable. People started buying and selling the cans purely to profit from price changes, not to eat them. Prices kept rising as traders speculated.
Eventually, someone opened a can to eat it—and found it tasted terrible. When they complained, they were told:
“Those aren’t eating sardines, they’re trading sardines.”
What it means
The theory highlights a key idea in economics and investing:
Some assets are bought not for their intrinsic value, but because people believe they can sell them later at a higher price.
Prices can detach from reality when speculation takes over.
