AFRICA’S PARATRANSIT MARKET SHARE

Paratransit in major African cities is most dominant in Kampala with an estimated 100% of the market share. Other cities including Kigali, Dar es Salaam and Dakar have a huge reliance on the paratransit system.

Paratransit equates to transportation services that supplement fixed-route mass transit (e.g. BRT; Trains) by providing individualized rides without fixed routes or timetables i.e Mini-Bus-Taxis.

TAXIS OF AFRICA

In Tanzania, iTaxi is called a “Dala dala”.

Dala dalas are beautifully decorated with paintings or slogans and some even have their route painted on the bonnet. They always have loud music on.

Dala dala started as an illegal shared taxi business in Dar es Salaam which is the biggest city in Tanzania. It was a response to the collapsing public transport system operated by the government at a time when there was increasing demand for these services.

TAXIS OF AFRICA

In Kenya, iTaxi is called a “Matatu”.

Although their origins can be traced back to the 1960s, matatu saw growth in Kenya in the 1980s and 1990s, and took the form of predominantly Japanese brand microvans, although by 2015, larger, bus-sized vehicles also started to be used as matatu. The name is also used in parts of Nigeria.

Today, an individual matatu must be associated with one of over 600 independent, government-registered groups known as SACCOs.

TAXIS OF AFRICA

In our neighbouring Mozambique, iTaxi is called a “Chapa”.

By the late 1980s unregulated minibus taxis known as chapa cem or simply chapas were appearing in Mozambique and soon became ubiquitous.

By 2007-2008 the government had begun light regulation of the sector, standardizing fares on the main routes. Parts of some major traffic arteries, such as the lower stretch of Avenida Lénine, became one-way streets to accommodate the demand and to ease traffic congestion.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a Competition Commission report, South Africans spend a significantly high proportion of disposable income on public transport (over 20 per cent) against a benchmark of 10 per cent for developing countries.

According to the report, rural workers are most affected by this with 73% of workers spending more than 20% of their total income on public transport.

TaxiPay™ looks to help rural workers by firstly eliminating the reliance on cash while traveling from rural to urban areas and also remove the cost of cash which significantly contributes to a decrease in their disposable income.

GET THAT HELPING HAND!

Digitising the taxi fare payment ecosystem opens up opportunities to public & corporate education bursars (e.g. NSFAS) who require an audit trail for student transport disbursements.
