The online store that kept selling products it didn't have
A composite of a pattern we see often enough with retail clients moving online for the first
time.
A growing homeware retailer launched an online store to complement their physical shop. The
store looked great and processed orders fine. The problem was underneath:stock levels on the
website were updated manually, once a day if someone remembered, while the shop floor sold
the same items in real time.
Customers routinely ordered items that had already sold out that morning. Refunding
disappointed customers, apologising, and losing the sale to a competitor became a weekly
occurrence, quietly undoing the value of even having an online store at all.
We rebuilt the store on a platform with real-time inventory sync between the till system and the
website, so stock updates the moment an item is sold, in-store or online.Overselling dropped to
virtually zero. Just as importantly, staff stopped spending time on refund conversations that
should never have needed to happen.
An online store is only as trustworthy as the stock numbers it shows.

The domain name mistakes that quietly cost businesses credibility

Choosing a domain name feels like a five-minute decision. The wrong one can cost credibility for years afterward.

Avoid unnecessary hyphens and numbers if the clean version is available — "techco26.co.za" reads as an afterthought next to "MrnLabs.co.za." Keep it short enough to say over the phone without spelling it out twice. Match it to your actual business name where possible; a mismatched domain makes people double-check they're on the right site.

Stick to a .co.za or .com where you can, particularly for South African businesses, since it signals a properly established local presence — unusual extensions can quietly read as less trustworthy to a stranger.

And critically, make sure your business, not a developer or agency, owns the domain outright. We see this go wrong often: a business grows, wants to switch providers, and discovers the domain is registered under an old developer's account who is no longer contactable.

Women's Day Special👩‍💼❤️

August 9 marks National Women's Day in South Africa, commemorating the 1956 march to the Union Buildings against the pass laws. It's also the start of a month spent recognising the role women play in business, government, and tech.

We work with women in software development who get asked to prove things a male colleague never has to — whether they actually wrote the code, whether the senior title is really deserved. The systems that run our everyday lives carry more women's fingerprints than most people assume.
