Breaking into tech isn't always easy.

For one of our Digital Academy (Shaper) alumni, the journey started in 2021 with a simple goal: finding a place in the industry.

Like many young professionals, he faced uncertainty, self-doubt, and the challenge of turning learning into real-world experience.

Today, he works as a Cloud Engineer, supporting the systems behind modern digital services.

Looking back, he says:

"Digital Academy helped me build both technical skills and resilience."

Careers aren't built overnight. They're built through persistence, learning, and opportunities to grow.

What's the biggest challenge facing young people trying to enter the tech industry today?

Maybe.
But that’s not really the question.
Technology has always changed work. What matters is how people adapt as it does.

So the better question is:
What becomes more valuable about me because AI exists?

Because AI will be fast, efficient, and everywhere.
But it won’t replace curiosity, judgment, or human understanding.
The future won’t belong to people competing with AI.
It will belong to people who learn how to stay useful inside changing system.

A generation that navigated a global pandemic, an uncertain economy, a rapidly changing world of work, and the challenge of building careers in industries that continue to evolve every year.

Yet despite it all, young South Africans continue to learn, grow, innovate, and show up.

Behind every application submitted, every skill learned, every late-night study session, and every step toward a better future is a young person refusing to give up.

To the youth of South Africa: we see your resilience, your ambition, and your determination.

Happy Youth Month.

Keep shaping what's next.

In 2019, sinthumule_maanda joined Shaper with limited industry experience but one thing that mattered just as much:

Ambition.

Like many young people trying to break into tech, he had to learn how to move from theory into real-world software development, working with teams, solving practical problems, and building systems that people actually use.

At Shaper, he was exposed to technologies like Angular, Node.js, and MongoDB, helping him build the confidence and technical foundation needed to step into the industry.

That journey later took him to African Bank as a Senior Angular Developer, where he worked on scalable banking applications and enterprise systems.

Today, Maanda is a Senior Software Developer at Tourvest Destination Management, helping maintain and modernise large business-critical systems using Vue.js, SQL, MongoDB, and more.

Stories like this matter because they remind young people that growth takes time.

Nobody starts as a senior developer.

Sometimes it starts with simply getting one opportunity to learn, build, and believe in yourself.

“I joined Shaper with limited industry experience but strong ambition.”

And look where that ambition led.

What’s one thing you think young people need more of when starting their careers, opportunity, confidence, mentorship, or exposure?

“Do I need to be good at Maths to work in tech?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from young people interested in joining Shaper.

And honestly? A lot of people are surprised by the answer.

Not every career in technology is built around advanced equations or complex coding. The industry also needs creative thinkers, planners, communicators, analysts, designers, and people who understand how systems and businesses work together.

The tech world is bigger than many people think.

Sometimes young people walk away from opportunities too early because they assume tech is only for “maths people.”

But there are many different pathways into the industry, and many different strengths that companies are looking for today.

What’s one misconception about working in tech that you think more people need to unlearn?

“I was part of the first group in 2015.”

It’s honestly amazing hearing that sentence today, knowing where the journey eventually led

Back then, it started with a simple opportunity at Shaper and a willingness to learn.

A few years later:
💻 Worked at Absa as a Software Developer
⚙ Worked at iOCO on a project building a Single Front End for one of SA's biggest telecoms

☁ Now working as a Software Engineer III at LexisNexis with AWS, Angular, C #, and Artificial Intelligence

Stories like this remind us that growth takes time.

Sometimes all someone really needs is:

- an opportunity,
- the right environment,
- and the courage to keep showing up consistently.

We’re incredibly proud of this journey and excited for what comes next 🚀 Collins M'caller Skheto Nkambule

One of the most underrated careers in tech right now is Solution Design
Solution Designers are the people helping businesses figure out how all their systems, teams, and technology should work together smoothly.

They solve problems before they become expensive ones.
As more companies move toward AI, automation, and digital systems, this role is becoming more important than ever in South Africa.

We recently had 7 of our own Solution Designers step into the workplace with Lombard Insurance for real industry exposure, and we’re incredibly proud of how far they’ve come

The future of work needs more people who can connect ideas, people, and systems together.
Do you think roles like Solution Design will become more important than traditional tech roles over the next few years?
