Command Quality is celebrating women in tech this month. Here is Nobuhle’s story, and it’s quite an inspirational one!
‘I did not choose IT. I remember the time after I’ve written matric very well, because my parents and I had huge fights. (For the record, one thing you should know about me is that I am not that smart, I do not even consider myself an average learner because I must work twice as hard as an average learner to obtain a 50%. So, I am a hard worker.)
‘Okay, back to the story. I had passed my matric with average marks and none of the top universities wanted me, so I had to upgrade my matric in 2016 (yes, I am that young). In 2017 I applied at Vaal University of Technology to complete a diploma in something (first choice was Safety because I always saw myself working in overalls). Guess what, I still did not qualify. There was only one option left, which was doing an extended program in IT so I can be admitted into something.
‘My mom and dad gave me an ultimatum: either do the extended program or go work somewhere. Now the pressure was real because all my age mates were in second year by then and I was doing an extended program.
‘A year later I started the actual diploma in IT, fell in love with it in the second year, and, of course, was nailing it with distinctions!
‘I obtained my diploma in record time, the advanced diploma record time, postgraduate diploma (aka honours) and yes, in record time. I am currently doing my master’s in IT, and I hope in record time, too.
'In conclusion, moms know best. My mom is the reason why I chose IT. So, as we celebrate women this month, I celebrate my mom as the Woman in Tech!’
