On this day in 1979 Alan Jones won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. It was the Williams team’s fourth consecutive win of the season and Jones’ third after his German and Austrian GP triumphs.

However, his race was not without problems as his gearbox kept jumping out of gear. This first occurred when he was around 45 seconds ahead of the second-placed car with 50 laps of the 75-lap race to go. He was thus not in danger and could afford to ease off slightly with his pit keeping him well informed of the situation.

Jody Scheckter - who had qualified fifth on the grid and was forced to drop to the back of the field on lap one after avoiding a race-ending accident between pole man Rene Arnoux (Renault) and Clay Regazzoni (Williams) – drove through the field in his Ferrari to finish a superb second.

Jacques Laffite completed the podium finishers for his Ligier team.

Other points scorers were Nelson Piquet, who finished fourth and a lap down in his Brabham Alfa, Jacky Ickx in the second Ligier and Jochen Mass in the Arrows

The race is remembered for the dramatic tyre failure on Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari on lap 51. Just after passing the pits, his left rear tyre exploded causing him to spin. He regained control to begin one of the wildest laps in F1 history, driving back to the pits on two tyres.
