Google's recent Penguin 3.0 update has confirmed that Google is serious about low quality backlinks. If your website has paid backlinks, or automatically created backlinks, chances are that your site will be penalized by Google. If you want to protect your rankings, you have to remove bad backlinks that point to your site.

Google's 'Panda' algorithm is a filter that Google designed to penalize web pages with thin or poor content. If the content of a website has been copied from other web pages, or if the content has very low quality, it won't rank well on Google.

What does this mean for your website?
1. If your website was penalized before penalized by the last Panda update, your rankings might recover if you have changed your web pages in the meantime.
If your rankings recovered by October, 5th, you made the right changes. If not, you have to improve the content of your web pages.
2. If your website was not penalized before then; if your website statistics show a significant traffic drop from Google, it might be that Google's new algorithm decided that your website content was not good enough.

How does Google rank your web pages?
Google explains the ranking algorithm like this:
"Traditional search engines rely heavily on how often a word appears on a web page. Google uses PageRank™ to examine the entire link structure of the web and determine which pages are most important.
It then conducts hypertext-matching analysis to determine which pages are relevant to the specific search being conducted. By combining overall importance and query-specific relevance, Google is able to put the most relevant and reliable results first."
As mentioned in the quote, Google uses PageRank (which is a mathematical formula and not the same as the green bar in the Google toolbar) and hypertext-matching analysis to rank your web pages. What does this mean?
1. You need good links
2. You need optimized web page content
3. One page is not enough
As mentioned in the explanation of Google's hypertext-matching analysis, Google also analyzes the content of other web pages on your site to ensure that your web page is really relevant.
That means that you must optimize different pages of your website for different but related search terms. The more web pages of your website are optimized for keywords about a special topic, the more likely it is that you'll get high rankings for a special keyword that is related to that topic.
It is not enough to optimize a single web page. The more pages you optimize, the more likely it is that your pages will get high rankings.

On-page Search Engine Optimization is important. Here's how to do it.
Your keywords must appear in the right web page elements
There are several things that you can do to make sure that your web pages will be found for the right keywords:
Target a maximum of two or thre keywords/key phrases on a single web page. If your website is highly relevant to one key phrase, it will get better rankings than a page that is somewhat relevant to many keywords.
Use your main keyword in the title of your web pages. That shows search engines that the web page is relevant to that keyword.
Use the key phrase in a heading tag on your web page. It sometimes helps to have the targeted keyword in the page URL. The images on your web pages should contain related keywords.
The content of your web page should contain the keywords for which you want to be found on search engines. Do not write content for search engines but create useful web pages that help your website visitors.
It is important that your keywords appear in the right elements on your web pages. If you use the keyword too often, this can look like spamming.
