On This Day | In 1993, Intel began shipping the Pentium processor, the company's next-generation CPU that would become one of the most recognisable names in computing. Featuring a superscalar architecture and significantly improved performance over the 486, the Pentium helped power a new generation of PCs throughout the 1990s.
Its launch marked a major milestone in processor design and played a key role in bringing multimedia, gaming and increasingly powerful software to mainstream users.
