LADYBRAND HIGH SCHOOL CULTIVATES FUTURE AGRICULTURAL LEADERS

Correspondent

Ladybrand High School is proud to offer its learners an exciting opportunity through the introduction of Agricultural Studies for Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners.
The subject was introduced at the school in 2026 and has already made a positive impact on learners by exposing them to valuable agricultural knowledge and practical skills. Through the course, learners gain insight into various aspects of agriculture, including soil science, plant science and animal science. More importantly, the programme encourages a love for growing crops and caring for animals while equipping learners with the skills needed to develop successful subsistence farming practices.
The practical component of the subject plays a significant role in learner development. Assessment tasks completed throughout the year provide learners with hands-on experience and teach them the value of hard work, responsibility and sustainable food production.
The initiative received a major boost when the Free State Department of Education donated agricultural tools to the school in February 2026. The school has also benefited from the guidance and support of Subject Advisor Mr E.P. Nel, who continues to assist with the successful implementation of the programme.
Another exciting milestone was reached on 11 June 2026 when a tunnel was erected at the school. This addition will provide learners with further opportunities to gain practical agricultural experience and enhance their understanding of crop production under controlled conditions.
Mr A. Adriaanse, who is responsible for teaching the, has played a key role in establishing and developing the programme. Ladybrand High School extends its sincere gratitude to the Free State Department of Education for this outstanding initiative.
The programme is creating valuable learning opportunities and empowering learners with skills that will benefit them for years to come while nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders.

D**k 'n Bietjie...

Maak nie saak of jou duif eerste of twintigste is nie. Solank jy net voor Hok X eindig, smaak die koffie daardie aand sommer beter. Wedvlugduiwe gaan uiteindelik oor veel meer as wen. Huis toe kom.

FRIENDLY RIVALRY ON THE GREENS AS SCHOOLS COMPETE IN BOWLS CHALLENGE

Correspondent

A spirit of camaraderie, healthy competition, and community fellowship was on full display when teachers from Ladybrand High School and Ladybrand Primary School took part in a bowls challenge at the Ladybrand Bowls Club on Tuesday, 16 June.
The event saw teachers from both schools pairing up to compete in two matches of 12 ends each.
With ideal weather conditions providing the perfect setting for the day, participants enjoyed an day of sport, laughter and friendly rivalry on the greens. Although the atmosphere remained relaxed and positive throughout the competition, the matches were fiercely contested, with every team eager to secure victory for their school.
Adding to the family-friendly nature of the event, many of the teachers’ children spent the day playing around the venue while parents competed on the greens.
Following an enjoyable day of bowls, the prize-giving ceremony brought the competition to a close. Ladybrand Primary School emerged as the overall winners and proudly received the floating trophy after an impressive performance. Individual honours went to Willie and Ina Snook of Ladybrand High School, who were named the best pair of the day for their outstanding game and consistency throughout the challenge.
Both schools expressed their appreciation to the Ladybrand Bowls Club for its hospitality, organisation and effort in hosting the event.
Participants agreed that the challenge was a great success and have already indicated their intention to make it a regular fixture, strengthening the bonds between the two schools while enjoying another memorable day on the greens in the future.

RESIDENTS TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD THROUGH COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EFFORT

Correspondent

Residents of Kriek Avenue and Huguenot Crescent rolled up their sleeves and joined forces on Saturday, 13 June 2026, to clean up their neighbourhood in a remarkable display of community spirit and pride.
Planning for the initiative began three weeks earlier when the date was set and shared with residents. To keep enthusiasm high, weekly reminders were posted on the neighbourhood WhatsApp group, encouraging everyone to participate in the community project.
At 08:30 on Saturday morning, residents gathered, armed with black refuse bags, rakes, garden forks, plastic gloves, and plenty of enthusiasm. Volunteers began cleaning their immediate surroundings before moving on to areas that required more attention. The effort was further strengthened when teenagers from a nearby hostel joined in and eagerly lent a helping hand. Within just one hour and twenty minutes, the transformation was visible. Streets and open areas were noticeably cleaner, creating a more pleasant environment for everyone who lives in the area. The neighbourhood regularly faces challenges caused by illegal dumping, as well as waste pickers who often tear open refuse bags, remove items they want, and leave the remaining rubbish scattered behind.
Residents acknowledge that the clean-up was not a permanent solution to these ongoing problems and that similar efforts will be needed from time to time. Another concern raised by residents is the condition of blocked stormwater drains, which contribute to drainage problems in the area. They believe that if the municipality could address this issue, the accumulation of plant material and debris would be reduced, allowing water to flow freely during rainy periods.
The residents of Kriek Avenue and Huguenot Crescent are proud of their neighbourhood and remain committed to keeping it clean, tidy, and welcoming.
Congratulations to the residents. Their initiative serves as an excellent example of what can be achieved when a community works together for the common good.

D**k 'n Bietjie...

Jy wil skree: DAAR IS VOLDOENDE FONDSE! Een oomblik staan jy soos 'n finansiële reus by die betaalpunt.
