RESIDENTS TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD THROUGH COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EFFORT
Correspondent
Residents of Kriek Avenue and Huguenot Crescent rolled up their sleeves and joined forces on Saturday, 13 June 2026, to clean up their neighbourhood in a remarkable display of community spirit and pride.
Planning for the initiative began three weeks earlier when the date was set and shared with residents. To keep enthusiasm high, weekly reminders were posted on the neighbourhood WhatsApp group, encouraging everyone to participate in the community project.
At 08:30 on Saturday morning, residents gathered, armed with black refuse bags, rakes, garden forks, plastic gloves, and plenty of enthusiasm. Volunteers began cleaning their immediate surroundings before moving on to areas that required more attention. The effort was further strengthened when teenagers from a nearby hostel joined in and eagerly lent a helping hand. Within just one hour and twenty minutes, the transformation was visible. Streets and open areas were noticeably cleaner, creating a more pleasant environment for everyone who lives in the area. The neighbourhood regularly faces challenges caused by illegal dumping, as well as waste pickers who often tear open refuse bags, remove items they want, and leave the remaining rubbish scattered behind.
Residents acknowledge that the clean-up was not a permanent solution to these ongoing problems and that similar efforts will be needed from time to time. Another concern raised by residents is the condition of blocked stormwater drains, which contribute to drainage problems in the area. They believe that if the municipality could address this issue, the accumulation of plant material and debris would be reduced, allowing water to flow freely during rainy periods.
The residents of Kriek Avenue and Huguenot Crescent are proud of their neighbourhood and remain committed to keeping it clean, tidy, and welcoming.
Congratulations to the residents. Their initiative serves as an excellent example of what can be achieved when a community works together for the common good.
