Essential skills training identifies strengths which can be enhanced in more than one specific discipline. MAN truck not behaving? The PTM control unit might be the culprit — and it's more common than you think.

The PTM (Powertrain Management) module on MAN trucks controls some of the most critical systems on the vehicle. When it starts failing, the symptoms can be confusing because they don't always point to one obvious cause.

Here's what to watch for:

— No communication faults — the module stops talking to other systems
— Engine temperature and coolant level warnings with no clear cause
— Engine fan running constantly or not at all

Scania gearbox playing up? Before you strip the gearbox — read this.

The OPC4 and OPC5 gearbox control unit is one of the most misdiagnosed faults on Scania trucks. The symptoms can look like a mechanical gearbox problem, but the gearbox itself is often perfectly fine.

Here's what we see constantly:

— Intermittent gear faults that come and go for no obvious reason
— The truck suddenly refuses to select gears at all
— No communication between the gearbox and other systems
