What Happens to Your Online Accounts When You Die?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As more people continue to jump on the latest social networking site or app to share their lives and interests with friends, dealing with the grim task of figuring out what to do with all the online accounts and social profiles of a deceased loved one is becoming more of a common situation that families are needing to face these days.

If a deceased user kept their login and password credentials completely private, then getting into any of their online accounts to obtain information or delete the account can be a tricky process for family members. When ignored, these online accounts -- particularly the user's social media profiles -- tend to remain active online well after the user's death To tackle this growing trend, a lot of major websites and social networks that collect user information have implemented policies for those that need to take care of a deceased user's account.

Here's a brief look at how a few of the web's biggest user-driven platforms suggest getting in contact with them so you can gain control of a deceased loved one's account or have shut it down completely.
Reporting a Deceased Person on Facebook

On Facebook, you have two different options when dealing with a deceased user's account.

First, you can choose to turn the user's account into a memorial page. Facebook basically leaves the user profile as it is, but prevents the memorialized page from being referenced on Facebook as an active user. Facebook will also take extra measures to secure the account in order to protect the privacy of the deceased user.

To have a user's account memorialized, a friend or family member must fill out and submit a Memorialization Request. You must provide proof of the user's death, such as a link to an obituary or news article, so that Facebook can investigate and then approve the request.
The other option you have is to ask Facebook to close the account of the deceased user. Facebook will only accept this request from immediate family members, asking them to fill out a Special Request for Deceased Person's Account.
Accessing a Deceased Person's Google or Gmail Account

Google says that in rare cases, it may be able to provide to the contents of a Google account or Gmail account to an "authorized representative" of the deceased user. While there's no guarantee that you may gain access to the account, Google ensures that it will carefully review all applications for this type of request.

You need to fax or mail a list of required documentation to Google, including a copy of the death certificate of the deceased user for valid proof. Upon review, Google will then get in touch with you by email to let you know if the decision has been made in order to move on to the next step in the process.

In April of 2013, Google introduced Inactive Account Manager to help users plan their "digital afterlives," which anyone can use to tell Google what they want done with all their digital assets after they've been inactive for a specific period of time. You can find out more about Google's Inactive Account Manager here.
Contacting Twitter About a Deceased User

Twitter clearly states that it will not give you access to a deceased user's account regardless of your relationship to the user, but it will accept requests to deactivate the user's account from either an immediate family member or a person authorized to act on the behalf of the estate.

To do this, Twitter needs you to provide the deceased person's username, a copy of their death certificate, a copy of your government-issued ID and a signed statement with a list of additionally required information, which you can find at this Twitter support link.

To complete the request, you must send the documentation either by fax or mail so that Twitter can verify it and deactivate the account.
Deactivating a Deceased User's Pinterest Account

Pinterest will not hand over login information of deceased user, but it will deactivate the user's account if you send over an email with a list of required information, including proof of the user's death.

You must provide a copy of the user's death certificate, an obituary or a link to a new article as valid proof for Pinterest to deactivate the deceased user's account.
Contacting Instagram About a Deceased User

In its privacy statement, Instagram asks you to get in contact with the company about a deceased user. Communication will take place via email while working to remove the account.

Similar to Facebook, you must fill out a form request to report a deceased person's account on Instagram, and provide proof of death, such as a death certificate or obituary.
Options Available When a Yahoo Account Owner Passes Away

Although Google may grant access to the contents of a deceased user's account in some instances, Yahoo, on the other hand, will not.

If you need to contact Yahoo about a deceased user's account, you can do so by mail, fax or email including a request letter, the Yahoo ID of the deceased user, proof that you have been authorized to act as the personal representative of the deceased and a copy of the death certificate.
Closing the PayPal Account of a Relative

To close the PayPal account of a relative, PayPal asks the estate executor to send a list of required information over by fax, including a cover letter for the request, a copy of the death certificate, a copy of the deceased user's legal documentation proving that the person making the request is authorized to act on behalf of them and a copy of photo identification of the estate executor.

If approved, PayPal will close the account and issue a check in the account holder's name if any funds have been left in the account.

10 Habits That Make Everyone Hate You On Social Media
==============================================
More than one out of every seven people in the world use Facebook, and people post well over 200 billion tweets per year. We have a lot to say.

However, many people might find a lot of our musings incredibly annoying. It's human nature. Note the following 10 techniques guaranteed to get you unfriended and unfollowed.
1. Always Selling

One of the worst sins, says Nika Stewart, owner of social media management company Ghost Tweeting, is posting only when you have something to promote. It’s cheesy and it’s spammy.

Social media is a conversation. No one wants to have a conversation with a door-to-door salesman.
2. Sending Automated Messages To New Followers

You may think sending a direct message to a new Twitter follower is a great idea, but experts advise to tread lightly.

“Thanking new connections and welcoming them into your community is the right sentiment and can lead to the beginning of terrific relationships,” says Stewart. But auto direct messages on Twitter, she explains, “are generic, and lack any personal information. So in many cases, they make you look uncaring and offend your target.”
3. Oversharing

Even if the only connections you have are your 10 closest friends, status updates and tweets are less private than you think. If you’ve forgotten who all your friends are, then definitely save the details of last night’s hookup for a carefully chosen few.

“You should be texting them, rather than posting in a public manner,” says Catherine Cook, cofounder and VP of brand strategy at MeetMe.com. Or better yet, call people one at a time to yak.
4. Not Thanking People

If someone answers a question, or shares your content with an enlightening comment, then acknowledge them. Ignoring them is much like disregarding someone who holds a door for you. It’s bad karma.
5. Reposting Too Much

Sending the same link 10 times in two hours may marginally increase the chance people click on your post. But if people stop following you because of your digital clutter, then you don’t come out ahead.
6. Sharing Chain Letters And Urban Legends

Anything that puts unwanted social pressure on people to take action is a bad idea. Likewise, before you share something shocking, do a quick Google search to find out if it’s on Snopes, the urban legends website.
7. Vaguebooking

This is defined as posting a status such as: "I guess I know now who my real friends are."

“[Vaguebooking] is designed to get the comments,” says Cook. Vaguebooking status updates are “usually something that’s just drama between friends,” she adds. That sort of drama doesn’t win you new Facebook friends or followers.
8. Hijacking The Bandwagon

If you’re interested in contributing to a trending hashtag on Twitter, by all means read and post along. But sometimes people just look at the list and think: “It’s trending! I should use it,” says Cook. “Well, why is it trending? Don’t just hop on.”

You’d hate to post a link to your old travel trips for Rio de Janeiro when it turns out the hashtag has to do with a major natural disaster that just hit the city.
9. Lacking Decorum

“The broad philosophy is that you should have a bigger filter online than you do in real life, and I think the reverse is actually the case,” says Cook. We say stuff online we’d never tell people to their faces. Even though in most cases, our private nastiness won’t be eternally recorded; whereas our social media posts will.

If you feel the need to insult a whole class of people, swear like a sailor, or post a political screed, ask yourself if you’d do it in front of 100 assembled coworkers, or in front of all your relatives at the Thanksgiving table. If you would, fine. But you probably wouldn’t.
10. Bad English

Posting. Periods. After. Every. Word. Or going over the top with ALL CAPS!!!!! On social media—as well as in more traditional communications channels—your choice of language can emphasize a point. You don’t need extra help with punctuation.

11 Surprises About The iPhone 6 And 6 Plus
====================================
With the dawn of a new iPhone comes the feeling that you’re living in the dark ages until you upgrade. So you’ve done it. You ignored the reasonable part of your brain that said, “Wait twelve more months and get a cheaper phone when it’s in contract! What are you doing you insane fool? Don’t you remember how you’re late on rent and Big Tom’s going to mess you up?” Big Tom can wait. Here are some surprises about your brand new device.

1. It’ll make your old phone feel tiny.

Whether you got an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus, they’re both going to feel comically large in comparison to your old iPhone. There are obvious benefits to this: more room for typing, more icons on the home screen and a bigger screen for watching low-resolution cat gifs. The iPhone 6 should still fit comfortably in your front pants pocket, but the 6 Plus and skinny jeans probably aren’t going to be best friends, so it might be a good idea to book time with your tailor.

2. The power button moved.

There’s nothing more humbling than buying a pricey new gadget and not being able to turn it on. The power button, which, since the dawn of time, has been on the top of the iPhone, is now on the side. But this is a good thing, because you can turn it off and on without having to shift your hand to tippy top of your now-giant phone.

3. It’s super tall, but there’s a trick around that.

The power button isn’t the only thing that was redesigned with the giantness in mind. If you’re holding either version of the iPhone 6 in one hand, a bunch of the icons at the top will be out of reach of your thumb. But not for long! If you double-tap the Home button (don’t click it, just tap it), the upper icons will shift within reach. This is the closest you’ll ever get to a Go Go Gadget Thumb.

4. It’ll last.

Battery issues tend to plague new devices, but it seems the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus hold their own. Don’t plan on going away for a long weekend without a charger, but you should be able to go about 36 hours without a plug. Which, these days, is the best you can usually hope for from a phone.

5. Your dog looks insane in super slow motion.

Slow-motion video was introduced with the iPhone 5S, but the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus amp things up with the ability to shoot EVEN SLOWER. If you don’t think this is useful, you clearly haven’t seen a video of your dog drinking water at super slow motion.

6. It knows what you’re going to say.

The larger screens of the new iPhones do make it a lot easier to use the touch-typing system, but to speed things up even more, the newest version of iOS 8 introduces predictive typing. Based on which words you frequently type, suggestions will pop up on the keyboard as you’re half-way through a word. It’ll even know if you’re typing to a friend or your boss and suggest more or less formal language, depending.

7. It’s moderately more beach-friendly.

Using a cell phone on a sunny day can be pretty awful. Apple clearly knows this because they added a new screen polarizer to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which makes it more visible in sunlight. Sand and saltwater, however, remain your new phone’s mortal enemy.

8. If you get a 6 Plus, things will look weird for a little while.
Launch Of The iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus

As we’ve discussed previously, the iPhone 6 Plus is freakin’ huge. The bigger screen makes browsing sites easier, and Apple did include an scaling program to smooth out the rough edges of older apps, but many app (like Kindle) won’t look quite right (i.e. a bit blurry) until the apps are updated to natively support the 6 Plus. So no, your eyesight isn’t going bad.

9. Quick searches.

Nerdy protip: You can search things super fast in the newest version of Safari just by typing the name of a site, followed by a space, followed by a topic. So “MTV Rihanna” will get you listening to “Monster” in no time flat.

10. The camera’s pretty damn powerful.

While the iPhone 6 Plus will edge out the iPhone 6 in image stabilization, both cameras are a big step up from past generations and allow for some pretty incredible shots. Case in point: Check some incredible photography taken in Iceland using both cameras.

11. It’s still not quite finished.

Even after you’re well-acquainted with your new iPhone, you should know that it’ll continue to evolve. There are a few features that haven’t turned on quite yet. The big one: Continuity. This lets you share your browser sessions and documents from your phone to your computer and back again (hopefully killing the need to do annoying things like emailing yourself to get files from your phone). C’mon future, hurry it up!
