The Centre for Geographical Analysis (CGA) was pleased to host Ms Gomolemo Segau of Gert Sibande District Municipality and Ms Afika Nyamambi of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality for a two-month internship from 15 September to 14 November 2025.

During their time at the CGA, they undertook a project analysing urban expansion in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality through land-cover assessments for 2013/14, 2018, 2020 and 2022, with the support and guidance of Mark Thompson of GeoTerra Image.

They also contributed to the Western Cape Flood Hazard Mapping Project, assisting with floodline digitisation and the compilation of historic flood event data to inform future flood-risk modelling. Both participated in the CGA’s Earth Observation short courses, further strengthening their practical GIS and remote sensing skills.

We thank Gomo and Afika for their enthusiasm, teamwork and dedication throughout their stay, and we wish them every success in their geospatial careers.
