As the Defence Industry Lekgotla 2026 concludes, we thank the organisers, participants and parliamentary representatives for their valuable contributions.

In her closing remarks, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, welcomed the strengthened relationship across the sector and emphasised that several actions can begin immediately. These include engaging National Treasury on PFMA-related constraints, unlocking defence exports, strengthening marketing and communication, advancing innovation and sovereign capability, and prioritising skills development and job creation.

Her call to action was decisive: the sector must remain agile, sustainable and committed to implementing the outcomes of the Lekgotla.

Day 2 of the Defence Industry Lekgotla 2026 begins with a clear call to action, taking lead from the message delivered by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga.

The Minister urged delegates to deliver more than another report, calling for bold, practical solutions driven by stronger public-private partnerships (PPPs). By strengthening collaboration between government, industry and academia, South Africa can boost innovation, local manufacturing, skills development and global competitiveness.

The 2026 Defence Industry Lekgotla gets underway today, bringing together key leaders from across South Africa’s defence ecosystem and related departments in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster and from the Economic Sectors and Employment Cluster.

Held under the theme “Institutionalising the Reform Defence Industry Lekgotla”, the engagement focuses on strengthening collaboration, innovation and coordinated action across the defence industry.

Armscor SOC Ltd joined the South African Navy in Durban as the country marked World Hydrography Day 2026, an occasion that highlights the role of hydrography in safe navigation, maritime security and sustainable ocean use.
For Armscor, the significance of this platform lies in the work that enables naval capability beyond the day itself.
Speaking on the sidelines to media, Dr Noel Mkaza, Group Executive: Research and Development, said Armscor was proud to celebrate this important occasion with the SA Navy, noting that the organisation’s support extends from maintaining Dockyard capabilities in Simon’s Town and Durban, to servicing the Navy’s procurement requirements.
The exhibition also created an opportunity for learners, maritime enthusiasts and members of the public to engage with Armscor’s work and better understand the role of defence industry partners in supporting South Africa’s maritime defence environment.
