Why does ISN Free WiFi have three different status pages? Here's the honest answer.

If you're evaluating a WiFi platform for your business, you'll eventually ask "what happens when something breaks, and how would I even know?" We built three separate status pages because one page can't honestly answer that question for everyone who needs it.

If our main application ever went down completely, this page would still be up and still tell you the truth. A status page that lives on the same server it's reporting on isn't really a status page, it's a hope. This one runs on its own.

Running WiFi across more than one location makes one number dangerous. A single blended revenue total for five, ten, or fifty routers tells you everything is fine on average, and nothing about which locations are actually carrying the business, since a router doing real business could sit right next to one earning almost nothing and the combined total would never tell you which was which, and an offline router looks identical in the data to one that is online and just not converting. We just shipped revenue tracking by router: every router now shows its own ad views, voucher redemptions, data plans sold, and the revenue each one earned, underperformers get flagged automatically against your own average, and live online/offline status sits right next to the numbers so a dead router is never mistaken for a bad one. The real number, per router, every time.

Free WiFi should be free. But free can attract a different kind of guest, the one who claims a limited free bundle, uses it up, then finds a way to claim it again.

Here is the problem we saw. A data bundle priced at R0 is bait for abuse. Once a guest exhausts it, two workarounds kept showing up.

The first is same device, new account. A guest re-registers with a different phone number or email on the exact same phone or laptop, hoping the system only remembers the account, not the device.

The second is same account, new device. A guest takes an account that already claimed the bundle and connects from a different phone or laptop, hoping the system only remembers the device, not the account.

Either trick alone used to work, because most systems check only one signal. Ours checks both, together, every time.

When a guest tries to claim a promo bundle, we check the device itself, through a fingerprint unique to that phone or laptop, and the account, through the guest's phone number or email. If either signal has already claimed the bundle, the new claim is blocked. Switching only the account does not work. Switching only the device does not work either. A guest would need a genuinely new device and a genuinely new identity at the same time, which is real friction, not a five second workaround.

Venues stay in control of the rules. Choose once ever, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly resets, and optionally set a start and end date for a limited time promo. A free (R0) bundle gets this protection automatically, since it needs it the most. A paid bundle can opt in too, useful for a steep discount a venue still wants to rate limit.

We also did not want guests finding out the hard way. A guest who has already claimed a bundle sees it greyed out before they even tap it, not a "sorry, try again" message after wasting their time.

The result is free and discounted WiFi that actually stays available to the next real guest, instead of being soaked up by the same person working around the rules.

Most WiFi platforms make you choose: simple and single-site, or "enterprise" and slow to add a new location.

We built ISN Free WiFi to skip that tradeoff.

One login runs an unlimited number of routers and sites. MikroTik, Teltonika, GL.iNet, generic OpenWRT, Cisco Meraki, and TP-Link Omada are fully automated, with guided manual setup for everything else. Adding a router is one SSH command and a wizard, whether it's your first site or your fiftieth.

Running more than one venue? Each site is a fully isolated captive portal (its own branding, routers, vouchers, guest data) with a rolled-up view of revenue and offline alerts across every location, so nothing needs your attention until it actually does.

Load shedding shouldn't cost your guests the WiFi time they already paid for.

Here's a scenario every South African venue owner knows: a guest buys a data bundle or unlocks a few hours of WiFi, the power cuts mid-session, and by the time the router's back up, their time has quietly ticked away for nothing.

We just shipped Fair Pause on ISN Free WiFi to fix exactly that.

If a specific router goes offline and a guest still has paid access time remaining, their session freezes the moment the outage starts and resumes exactly where it left off once the router's back online. A guest with 4 hours left when it drops still has 4 hours left when it returns, no matter how long the outage runs.

A few things we made sure of:

It's scoped to the exact router affected. Every other router on your network keeps running normally, so one outage never touches guests somewhere else on your property.

It's protected against double dipping. If a guest moves to another router of yours during the outage and keeps browsing there, they don't also get credited when the original router comes back.

It only protects real revenue. Ad unlocks, purchased vouchers, data plans, POS sales and API grants are covered. Free resident vouchers aren't part of it.

It's on by default, with a toggle if you'd rather access simply expire on schedule.

Fairness like this isn't just a technical detail. It's what builds trust between a guest and the venue running their WiFi, the difference between "this WiFi ripped me off" and "this place actually looks out for you." Small feature, real trust.

New WiFi feature, and it comes with a rule we baked in on purpose: it can only ever turn power down, never up.

WiFi signal / coverage control is live on ISN Free WiFi. If you run a venue in a dense building, shared walls, a shop next door, a busy street outside, your WiFi doesn't stop at your own doorway by default. That means random people outside can connect, and networks nearby can interfere with yours. This setting lets you dial back your router's own broadcast power so your coverage stays closer to where your guests actually are.

Here's the part we think matters most. South Africa's ICASA sets legal ceilings on how much power WiFi gear can broadcast without a license, 20 dBm on 2.4GHz, 30 dBm on 5GHz. We built those limits directly into the system as a hard cap. A venue can lower their signal all they want, but the platform will never let anyone push it above the legal exempt limit, no matter what the router hardware itself is capable of. Staying under that ceiling is what keeps a venue operating license-free in the first place, so we made it impossible to accidentally step over it.

Independent control for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Off by default, nothing changes until a venue sets a value. Built for MikroTik and OpenWRT-based routers.
