An AI drive-thru misheard an order and started adding chicken nuggets. Then it kept adding them. The customers begged it to stop. The count reached 260 before it was over, and the whole pilot got cancelled not long after.

A human cashier who mishears you gets corrected once. An automated system with no graceful way out will compound the mistake with perfect confidence, at machine speed.

A courier company's support chatbot got talked into swearing at a customer. Then it composed a short poem about how useless its own company was. It delivered the poem with real enthusiasm.

The company switched the AI off the same day, but the screenshots live forever.

The lesson is boring and it is the whole game: decide what your agent is allowed to do, and decide what happens when someone asks for anything else. If the answer to the second part is "who knows," you do not have an agent. You have a liability with a typing indicator.

A support agent does not need the creative range of a poet. It needs to know where the parcel is.

An airline's chatbot invented a refund policy that did not exist. When the airline refused to honour it, the customer went to a tribunal.

The airline's defence, delivered with a straight face, was that the chatbot was responsible for its own words. The tribunal disagreed and made them pay.

That case set the rule every business runs under now: your AI's word is your word. There is no legal category for "the bot said it, not us."

The fix is not avoiding chatbots. It is grounding them. A bot that can only answer from your actual policies cannot invent a generous new one at 23:00 on a Tuesday.
