Strengthening immunization planning through data and collaboration 🤝📊

Akros and CIDRZ teams joined the District Nursing Officer (DNO) and Chainda Rural Health Centre staff to review how GIS maps and the Digital Microplanning Dashboard are being used to guide immunization efforts.

Teams also supported health facility staff in setting up and completing vaccination site forms on mobile devices linked to GIS mapping, helping streamline data collection and improve accuracy in real time.

Together, they reviewed the vaccination dashboard to assess performance and evaluated how digital GIS tools are being implemented to monitor coverage and site effectiveness.

Mass drug administration sounds simple on paper.

In reality:

These factors kept treatment coverage low in Mali’s KA05 transmission zone for years.

Phase 2 combined:

Congrats to co-authors on this new paper which highlights the The National Institutes of Health DS-I Africa initiative, an $88M effort advancing data science and AI for health discovery across Africa. The program is building African-led research capacity, developing new tools for disease surveillance and diagnostics, and strengthening data infrastructure for better public health decision-making. At Akros, we contribute geospatial analytics and digital tools that help translate complex data into actionable insights for disease surveillance and health system planning.

The global standard for onchocerciasis elimination is:

➡️ ≥80% population coverage (of eligible individuals)
➡️ 100% geographic coverage (all endemic communities reached)

In Mali’s KA05 zone, Reveal-supported microplanning strengthened reach at the household level — ensuring distributors physically reached structures that had historically been missed.

From 38.4% to 95.1% household treatment coverage in one year.

In Mali’s KA05 transmission zone, eliminating river blindness means reaching every community — even the most remote gold mining sites and seasonal settlements.

In 2024, coverage gaps persisted due to incomplete microplanning, weak supervision, and hard-to-reach hamlets.

By Phase 2 in 2025:

✔️ 100% geographic coverage — all 1,049 mapped hamlets were visited
✔️ 99.8% of mapped structures reached
✔️ Household-level follow-up confirmed dramatically improved treatment reach

Within NTD programs, the goal is 100% geographic coverage and at least 80% population coverage to interrupt transmission (WHO 2021–2030 roadmap).
Digital microplanning and real-time supervision helped ensure no hamlet was missed.

Distributing insecticide-treated nets is only the first step.

In some communities, ITNs are being repurposed, underscoring the importance of continued education, follow-up, and community engagement. Monitoring helps ensure nets are used as intended — to protect families from malaria.

📢 New Publication Alert!

Proud to share our new paper in PLOS Global Public Health: “A geo-enabled digital tool for microplanning and delivery of indoor residual spray in Zambia: A case study, 2016–2020.”

Led by Dr. Anne Martin, this work highlights how the Reveal platform supported Zambia’s National Malaria Elimination Programme to plan and execute IRS campaigns using accurate settlement maps, mobile data collection, and real-time monitoring.

💡 Why this matters:

Cost savings: More precise household targeting reduced unnecessary use of spray, fuel, and personnel time.

Efficiency gains: Teams were better able to reach the right households at the right time, strengthening overall operational performance.

Improved impact: Reveal helped identify differences between reported and actual coverage—showing that routine reports tended to overestimate coverage (by an average of 31.5%). Access to more accurate data supports more informed decision-making and more effective malaria control.

This case study demonstrates how geo-enabled microplanning ensures that limited resources are used strategically and equitably, ultimately strengthening national malaria elimination efforts. Our thanks to the National Malaria Elimination Programme and numerous co-authors on this multifaceted work!

Seeking to Eradicate Malaria, Zambia Turns to Geospatial Data

How do you make sure malaria interventions reach every household? In a growing number of countries in Africa, the answer has been geospatial data.

As an example, through collaboration between Zambia’s Ministry of Health, NMEC, GRID3, PATH, PMI, and Akros, geo-enabled maps and the Reveal platform helped guide indoor residual spraying and bed net distribution with greater precision. High-resolution population data and field-verified mapping supported smarter microplanning, reduced overlap of interventions, and improved resource allocation across nearly all districts.

This work shows how geospatial tools can turn data into action—supporting governments to plan more effectively and accelerate progress toward malaria elimination.

Field Reality - Travel & Access

Collecting data and distributing life-saving drugs in remote communities isn’t easy.

Our teams walk for hours where vehicles and motorbikes can’t reach, cross rivers by canoe or on foot, and travel to some of the hardest-to-reach health facility catchment areas. Even submitting data can mean climbing structures or searching for network signal.

This is what last-mile data collection and life-saving service looks like.

Strengthening Pharmacovigilance in the Comoros: From Awareness to Action

In 2023, pharmacovigilance in the Union of the Comoros was nascent, characterized by limited vaccine adverse event reporting. Through the Africa CDC-led Saving Lives and Livelihoods Phase II (SLL2) Program, with support from the Mastercard Foundation, Akros Research supported the implementation of safety surveillance formative supervision activities across the islands. These activities were designed to ascertain reporting impediments and provide real-time training to healthcare professionals.

Key achievements include:
✅ A substantial increase in reporting, from an initial 1 to 4 reports per year to 19 reports solely from Anjouan.
✅ 164 healthcare professionals received training, enhancing their proficiency in the detection and reporting of adverse events.
✅ The establishment of a culture of safety and transparency, which encourages healthcare workers to report adverse events without apprehension.

As Dr. Soibahou, former Pharmacovigilance Focal Point, remarked:
"These supervisions represented a pivotal step in reinforcing patient safety and fostering a culture of vigilance."

The key takeaway:
Formative supervision is a powerful way to strengthen reporting systems, improve patient safety, and build confidence in medicines and vaccines. Ongoing, regular supervision will be essential to sustain this progress.

Transforming Silence into Systems:

Strengthening Pharmacovigilance in Tanzania’s Lake Zone

Through the Africa CDC–led Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) Phase II program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, Akros partnered with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health and the Tanzania Medicines & Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) to strengthen pharmacovigilance in Mwanza and Geita regions.

Using a two-pronged approach—hands-on training and targeted supportive supervision—Akros helped activate reporting systems that were previously underutilized.

✔️ 1,193 healthcare workers trained across 140 facilities
✔️ 170 pharmacovigilance focal persons empowered
📈 Mwanza increased AEFI reporting from 1 to 676 cases
📈 Geita moved from zero reporting to 516 cases in a single month

This experience reinforces a critical lesson: training builds knowledge, but supportive supervision activates systems. When healthcare workers are equipped and supported, pharmacovigilance becomes a living safeguard for public health.

From Zero Reporting to Action: Strengthening Vaccine Safety in Somalia

Until recently, vaccine safety monitoring in Somalia has been largely inactive. AEFIs often went unreported due to limited systems, tools, and training. Through the Africa CDC–led Saving Lives and Livelihoods Phase II (SLL2) Program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by Akros Research, that is changing.

✅Health workers across all Federal Member States were trained on AEFI identification and reporting

✅AEFI tools, SOPs, and patient materials were distributed nationwide

✅Digital reporting through VigiFlow was strengthened

✅Pharmacovigilance focal points were established nationwide

The result: Somalia has moved from minimal reporting to active, nationwide AEFI reporting, supporting safer vaccines and stronger public trust.

About Us

Akros is a cutting edge organization that establishes data-driven and technologically appropriate systems to improve the health and well-being of disadvantaged communities. We pride ourselves in our ground-level knowledge of the service delivery systems where we work, and our ability to provide novel, lasting solutions implemented in developing regions.

Although we have strong roots in malaria surveillance and data systems strengthening, we design and implement data systems across multiple sectors. Akros is a data systems architect and contractor, with specific expertise in the soft-skills of implementation—especially important in the contexts in which we work.

Akros works with a broad range of donors, partners and stakeholders to pursue this mission, including USAID, UNICEF, the Government of Zambia and traditional leaders. The breadth of Akros’ projects have enabled our teams to establish working relationships at the sub-national and community levels in all ten provinces in Zambia, across nearly 40,000 villages as well as at the central level in Botswana, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.
