Sextortion emails - what you need to know...

"P**n scam" emails are scary hoaxes where cybercriminals claim to have used malware to film you via your we**am. Sadly, a huge spam campaign in the last few days means that millions of people received one of them over the past weekend.

Even people who never watch p**n and don’t have a we**am often feel scared and confronted by the aggressive claims of malware implanted on their computer.

Last Friday, Apple and Google announced that they are joining forces to create a contact tracing tool that will help people determine whether they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. Contact tracing is a tool that allows public health authorities to track the spread of the disease and inform the potentially exposed so that they can get tested by identifying and following up with people who have come into contact with a COVID-19-affected person.

Google and Apple said: "Through close cooperation and collaboration with developers, governments and public health providers, we hope to harness the power of technology to help countries around the world slow the spread of COVID-19 and accelerate the return of everyday life." The companies say they are committed to the effort and insist that privacy, transparency, and consent "are of utmost importance" as they work to build this functionality.
