Are there too many fuel stations in Harare ?

3I recently read an article that noted the growing number of fuel stations in Harare. In this short post I aim to investigate if this has any merit.

We study Harare’s relationship with fuel stations. The city has 270 retail stations covering an area of 872 square kilometers. This equates to one fuel station for every 3 square kilometers catering to 1511 households and an estimated 581 cars.

Of course, this is a general view and a closer look is warranted. I took Mt Pleasant constituency vs. Glenview North constituency as case studies for petrol station density

The first case study is the Mt Pleasant constituency with an area of 69.1 square kilometers. And serviced by 38 retail fuel stations. That gives 1 petrol station per 1.8 square kilometers, catering to 366 households and an estimated 140 vehicles.

The second case study is Glenview North constituency with an area of 12.7 square kilometers and 11 fuel stations. That gives 1 petrol station per 1.15 square kilometer catering to 2010 households and an estimated vehicles 773 vehicles

Are there too many? an average fuel station can fuel 250 cars, for Mt Pleasant the answer is yes there are too many, and for Glenview North, there are too few.

FYI , the average area of households in Mt Pleasant is 4958.3 square meters vs 574m square meters in Glenview North

A captivating narrative is revealed when the digital environment of a nation of 15 million people is examined in further detail. 9,720,328 internet SIM cards are currently active, indicating a large online presence. There are currently 6,123,807 smartphone units in use or 63% of all active mobile internet connections. It's noteworthy that 2,816,951 of them have LTE capabilities for high-speed mobile internet access. Analysising social media platform utilization, 3,722,886 WhatsApp users and 2,302,427 Facebook fans are actively using these two platforms. Additionally, LTE coverage benefits 1,690,171 people, ensuring easy access to these digital services. With 408,254 users, Twitter manages to compete as a microblogging platform in this dynamic online environment.
