“You don’t have to trust me, here’s the data to prove it.”

Ryan Burgin of Hashtag Mechanic was asked whether technology can make a tire inspection clear enough that the technician can hand over the data and have the customer trust their recommendations.

His answer was yes, with a condition: the numbers have to come off the tire and reach the customer unchanged, in a report they can read without help. That is what makes a recommendation believable.

Technicians can now mark rim, shoulder, and groove damage during the inspection and attach photos to the report. You can also flag a tire as not roadworthy even when the tread reading looks fine.

Your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road. Everything else depends on them.

In this episode of 5 Questions With, racer Wesley Slimp explains why that fact hits differently on a racetrack. Race car drivers push their tires to the edge of their grip on purpose, lap after lap, and learn to feel exactly where that edge is.

Most people on the road only find it once, by surprise, and usually in bad weather.

Which is why what happens in the inspection bay matters. Technicians and inspectors are the ones reading tread, sidewall condition, and age long before a driver ever gets near that limit.
