What does Country mean to you?

It's a big question, and one that can hold very different meanings and responsibilities for different people.

At the end of July, our Archaeologist Shayne Bates attended the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) Congress in Gimuy/Cairns, where this year’s theme, ‘Indigenous and Local Knowledge Connections: Honouring Heritage and Innovation’, brought together First Nations and Indigenous practitioners from across the continent and around the world.

While she was there, Shayne caught up with mob and asked them to reflect on what Country means to them.

The new Toowoomba Hospital is taking shape as a major new health facility for the Darling Downs, designed to serve the community for generations to come.

Beyond its clinical spaces, the hospital will also carry culture and Country within its walls.

Blaklash has been working with emerging contemporary Aboriginal artist Arabella Walker on two significant public artworks that will form part of the facade, creating a connection between the building and the Country it stands on. Recently, we viewed an early facade prototype alongside Arabella and the project team to see how her work will come to life as part of the major project.

We cannot wait to see the project come to life over the coming months.

What does creating real impact for First Nations communities look like from inside some of Australia’s biggest organisations?

The Blaklash FORUM series is back with Creating Impact for First Nations Communities, bringing together three First Nations leaders we’ve had the privilege of working closely with through our collaborations on their Brisbane workplaces.

Jordan Eaton (Lendlease), Mel Grills (Arup) and Norman Laing (EY Australia) will join our Managing Director Troy Casey for a conversation about the work they’re doing and the spaces they’re working within, and what it takes to create meaningful outcomes with and for First Nations communities.

It’s a chance to hear from experienced First Nations professionals working across different industries and spend the evening with a likeminded community.

Standard housing models aren't designed for everywhere. That’s why the Wujal Wujal Design Principles, developed by Blaklash with community and Phorm architecture + design, set out clear departures from business-as-usual social housing.

Wujal Wujal is a small, remote community in Far North Queensland, shaped by cyclones, flooding and a hot, humid tropical climate.

Drawn from the lived experience of the local community, the Wujal Wujal Design Principles translate cultural priorities and climate realities into practical guidance for future housing and infrastructure in the community.

In a recent artist talk alongside Koa, Kuku Yalanji, Meriam Mir and South Sea Islander artist Keemon Williams, Sam spoke about the First Nations cosmologies, kinship systems and non-linear understandings of time that inform Kin'O'Centrism.

At Blaklash, it always starts with Country. And at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)'s X Block, that meant a workplace shaped by the stories of Barrambin (Victoria Park) and Mt Kuta (Mt Coot-tha), two landmarks visible from the building, and now present in every corner of the space inside.

We worked with Wilson Architects and Yuggera artist Ailsa Walsh to embed those narratives into the layout, the palette and the artwork of Levels 5 and 6. Then we brought in weavers from Arnhem Land, the Torres Strait and the Northern Rivers to include works that carry culture from across the continent.

Meet Brooke, our Designer, with a focus on Interiors.

A Badimaya Yamaji woman, Brooke’s mob’s Country is in Western Australia’s mid-west. Raised on Gayiri Country in central Queensland, she's now based in Brisbane, where she's completing her Bachelor of Design (Honours).

At Blaklash, Brooke supports concept development, research and documentation across a range of projects.

“Being able to create spaces with Country at the heart is deeply fulfilling,” she says. “It continually reminds me why this work matters.”

Brooke is currently contributing to the redevelopment of Griffith University's CBD Campus, working alongside Erin on the heritage-listed building ahead of its planned opening in 2027. As a Griffith design student herself, it’s a project that carries added meaning.

That connection to place also runs through Brooke’s creative practice outside Blaklash. A country girl at heart, she grew up on a cattle farm in central Queensland and now works as a mural artist, creating playful cow murals for communities across the region.

We are grateful to have Brooke as part of the team and can't wait to see what we create together next.
