Standard housing models aren't designed for everywhere. That’s why the Wujal Wujal Design Principles, developed by Blaklash with community and Phorm architecture + design, set out clear departures from business-as-usual social housing.

Wujal Wujal is a small, remote community in Far North Queensland, shaped by cyclones, flooding and a hot, humid tropical climate.

Drawn from the lived experience of the local community, the Wujal Wujal Design Principles translate cultural priorities and climate realities into practical guidance for future housing and infrastructure in the community.

We asked our team to share a few of the projects they’re excited about working on right now. Every one of them is a chance to bring Country and culture to the forefront, and we’re grateful for every opportunity to do this work.

At Blaklash, it always starts with Country. And at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)'s X Block, that meant a workplace shaped by the stories of Barrambin (Victoria Park) and Mt Kuta (Mt Coot-tha), two landmarks visible from the building, and now present in every corner of the space inside.

We worked with Wilson Architects and Yuggera artist Ailsa Walsh to embed those narratives into the layout, the palette and the artwork of Levels 5 and 6. Then we brought in weavers from Arnhem Land, the Torres Strait and the Northern Rivers to include works that carry culture from across the continent.

Meet Brooke, our Designer, with a focus on Interiors.

A Badimaya Yamaji woman, Brooke’s mob’s Country is in Western Australia’s mid-west. Raised on Gayiri Country in central Queensland, she's now based in Brisbane, where she's completing her Bachelor of Design (Honours).

At Blaklash, Brooke supports concept development, research and documentation across a range of projects.

“Being able to create spaces with Country at the heart is deeply fulfilling,” she says. “It continually reminds me why this work matters.”

Brooke is currently contributing to the redevelopment of Griffith University's CBD Campus, working alongside Erin on the heritage-listed building ahead of its planned opening in 2027. As a Griffith design student herself, it’s a project that carries added meaning.

That connection to place also runs through Brooke’s creative practice outside Blaklash. A country girl at heart, she grew up on a cattle farm in central Queensland and now works as a mural artist, creating playful cow murals for communities across the region.

We are grateful to have Brooke as part of the team and can't wait to see what we create together next.

Often projects that involve First Nations communities still only expect "consultation." In practice, that's often meant telling community a decision that has already been made, and hoping they're okay with it.

We see the best outcomes when community shape projects, embed stories into design, and share in the benefits.

The distinction between consultation and engagement might sound small on paper, but it's enormous in practice. Our Managing Director Troy Casey unpacks why in this piece on what it actually takes to Design with Country.

If you're in Gimuy (Cairns) over the next month, pop into Cairns Art Gallery to see acclaimed Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri multidisciplinary artist Sam Harrison's latest exhibition.

Kin'O'Centrism was commissioned through the inaugural CIAF Resonance Major Commissioning Project, delivered in partnership between CIAF and Blaklash and presented by Cairns Art Gallery with support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

The exhibition explores Indigenous systems of kinship extending across human, animal, botanical, celestial and spiritual worlds through a contemporary, non-linear understanding of time. Central to the exhibition is the new Eclipse Series (2026), an immersive assemblage of tessellating lightboxes that examines cycles of cultural, secular and cosmological life.

Introducing Ainsley Carey, our new Designer.

For her, designing with Country means responding to what already exists, and creating spaces that feel deeply connected to place, people and story.

Leaning into her strength in hand drawing, Ainsley begins every project by sketching concepts first, using the process to explore ideas, relationships and connections.

"It's great for testing ideas and figuring things out quickly," she shares, "which is something I think I would miss if I went digital-first."

Her approach to working with community is grounded in listening closely, paying attention to both what's said and what's shown, and translating that into design outcomes that genuinely reflect the people they're created for.

"It comes down to respect, responsibility and accountability," she says. "Respecting what's come before, carrying that forward, and keeping Country at the centre of my decisions."

When asked what advice she'd give to someone wanting to pursue similar work, her answer was simple: "Try, fail, try again. There's always someone in your corner rooting for you!"

Honoured to be a part of the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After the Rain, curated by Tony Albert. It has officially begun its national journey, from Canberra to the nearby Gold Coast, showcasing powerful works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists that reflect on the past while imagining our shared future.
