Fridges across Europe got hacked.

Hackers raised the temperature through the controller system, not the fridge itself. Some stores lost around €100,000 in food they had to throw away. Seven countries hit.

How they got in: out-of-date firmware, or the factory password still set on a web portal technicians use for alerts and settings.

Moral of the story: change the default password. And treat fridge controllers like real systems. Patch them. Don't leave them open on the internet.
No crazy AI hacking here. Just old mistakes on internet-facing OT.

So what are abliterated models?

They're everywhere in the news right now after last week's cybersecurity spike. If you work in cyber, you need to know what these are. You might already be using them.

Regular models like Claude and ChatGPT are built to refuse dangerous cybersecurity asks. Open-weight models are different. You can change how they function.

Abliteration finds the trained behaviour that makes the model say "I can't help with that," then weakens or removes it. Researchers call that orthogonalizing the weights against a refusal direction.

These models are already out on the open internet. For audits on your own systems, you may need them. Run them in a sandbox, and only against systems you have written authority to test.

You don't need millions to train a new model. Slightly alter an open-weight one, or rent it by the hour from an API.

If your LLM keys get stolen, someone else runs up the bill under your company's name.

Railway disclosed this week that the systems holding customer environment variables were accessed, and some values may have been decrypted. Railway believes the attack was aimed at AI inference providers, so LLM API keys were a likely target.

Three ways to protect yourself from a massive bill:

1. Keep key lifetimes short, so stolen keys expire fast.
2. Set hard spending caps on each key.
3. Most important: put an LLM gateway between your app and the inference provider. Then monitoring, security controls and spending caps all live in one central place.

If you're on Railway, rotate your keys now. Changing the value in Railway isn't enough. Revoke the old key at the provider too.

AI transformation is an invasive procedure.

Vas from Varick Agents posted a really useful article today, and the part on specialisation stood out to me.

His point is to be wary of companies that only build one kind of agent, like HR agents. To be really useful, an agent has to pull information from several departments in the business.

So doing it well means going into each department, understanding how they work together, and learning the real processes before you build anything.

That's exactly the job of a forward deployed engineer, and it applies to small businesses as much as enterprise.
