This is scary!
Scammers can take over your mobile number if telcos don’t have strong identity checks in place.
We’ve penalised SpinTel $59,400 after scammers exploited a vulnerability in its systems and transferred 10 customers’ mobile numbers without authorisation. Reported financial losses were more than $45,000.
Once scammers get control of your mobile service, they may be able to access things like banking apps, health records and personal information.
All telcos must verify the identity of a customer before transferring in their mobile number from another provider. These rules exist to protect you, and we’ll act when providers don’t follow them.
Think your number has been fraudulently transferred?
• Contact your telco immediately
• Contact your bank or financial institution
• Report it to police
